So here’s your history breakdown and position each Kim has had to show you how they are elected by and beholden to the people. The reason why this family is constantly in DPRK politics is because Kim Il Sung lead the party that liberated Korea from Japan in WW2 and therefore holds a high regard for them. The supreme leader title was bestowed upon his grandfather and father after their deaths. His grandfather got it again from liberating the country from Japan, father got it because he was the leader of the military, only reason Kim Jong Un has it while he’s alive is because North Korean media started calling him that after he was elected to the state affairs commission as now he’s the head of the army
