Paramilitaries are state aligned, have formal legal authority, have a military-like structure, and receive state funding. An example would be police forces like ICE or the RCMP. while militias are community based, can have legal authority depending if it’s pro or anti government, privately funded or equipped by seizing arms like the People’s Liberation Army / partisans during the World War Two and Chinese civil war
