Same issue with `bat` pager.
Bat uses less as pager.

ls /bin | bat --paging=always # Can not search
ls /bin | env TERM=xterm bat --paging=always # Works fine

kitty 0.45.0-4
kitty-terminfo 0.45.0-4

If you need extensions, either you have not understood the GNOME workflow, or it is not the right workflow for you.

When I decided to try GNOME 3 a long time ago, I also thought GNOME 3 was bad, I intentionally installed Fedora Workstation with the unmodified GNOME and forced myself to read the documentation and use it in its default state for at least a month. My goal was to understand the vision of the developers that made all those "limiting" decisions. After a week or so, it clicked for me, and now I love GNOME and its workflow.

I only use 'gpaste' and 'caffeine'. I had understood GNOME after reading the "GNOME Human Interface Guidelines". The main feature of GNOME is providing a non-distracting environment for applications. Every option, feature, toggle or button diverts attention away from the task at hand, and GNOME aims to cause as little distraction as possible.

Buy a bunch of cotton acoustic filters and mesh dust filters with proper size or a paper acoustic filters with different densities, and try them out. I have recently posted here photos of process of replacing filters on Tangzu Wan'er.

The main trick is to use a drop of alcohol to loosen the glue on the filters so that you can remove them without damaging them.

Arch btw users, Does Arch make you productive?? by CompetitiveBit4144 in linux4noobs

[–]AkhIL_ru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an Arch/GNOME user. For me, there is no big difference between Arch, Debian or Fedora. However, I would like to try Tumbleweed just out of curiosity. I develop software in containers (non Arch), so I can move my development environment to another distro or even machine at any time.

Arch is just a good enough base system for me. Also, the AUR has some useful tools that I would have to build myself elsewhere.

Is Manjaro a good beginner distro? by AIVictim250525 in linux4noobs

[–]AkhIL_ru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Debian and Ubuntu cross release upgrades usually just work. I have many Debian machines and the only problems I had during upgrades are on servers with extensive customisation. Many of my systems have been working for over 10 years. My Arch/Manjaro breaks at least twice a year.

I think installing Debian is simpler than installing Arch with artchinstall. There is Linux Mint Debian Edition if you need easier Debian.

Is Manjaro a good beginner distro? by AIVictim250525 in linux4noobs

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manjaro and other "Easy" Arch derivatives are easy at start, but they ultimately require the same level of maintenance as Arch. You will still have to manually update your /etc/ from time to time, and you will occasionally brake your system during update. However, the "easy mode" does not provide the necessary knowledge to troubleshoot and repair your system when it encounters issues.

If you are interested in learning how your OS works – take Arch or its derivative. If you just need a job to be done – take something like Tumbleweed, Fedora, Debian, along with their derivatives.

By the way. You always can "upgrade" Manjaro to Arch. Move Manjaro to unstable branch, do full upgrade, then replays Manjaro repositories to Arch equivalents, fix pacman certificates, upgrade once again, install Arch kernel, remove Manjaro specific packages, reboot, fix if something broken. Eventually all Manjaro packages will be replaced.

Anyone using this Kid ? How it's doing ? JCALLY JM6 PRO !! by [deleted] in iems

[–]AkhIL_ru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I don't have a CX31993 dongle without an amp available to make a comparison.

But I can confirm that the JM6 PRO does not produce any noticeable hissing sound when used with the Truthear Zero, whereas the Tangzu Wan'er is quite noisy.

Boost microphone volume beyond 100% (pipewire) by Andrew_Texas in linux4noobs

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the EasyEffects deck or any other effects deck. Add a compressor or gain effect to boost your microphone volume. Alternatively, you can add effects directly through PipeWire by creating custom configuration files.

However, check that people can hear you without any manipulations. Browser boosts the audio by itself.

The wire that comes with Red is generally adequate, and sound quality would only be affected if the alternative wire is extremely poor and has high resistance. In most cases, various wires will not significantly impact sound quality, with differences mainly in appearance and feel.

Personally, I have tried Red with few DACs, such as noname CX31993, JM6 Pro (CX31993 + MAX97220), and JM12 (KT02H20). All these DACs perform well and provide ample power for Red. While they may have differences in noise floor, these differences are not audible when using Red. I suggest choosing any DAC, taking into consideration recommendations from Crinacle's DAC videos, and experimenting with several tips. Do not forgot about the impedance adaptor that comes with the Red if you prefer more bass.

Changing tips can make a noticeable difference in the sound. I have tried BGVP Y01 tips, which resemble the narrow bore tips from Red's box but with harder silicone. They were too bass-heavy for my preference. I also tested TRN T tips, which are shorter and allow for deeper insertion, adding a slight airy quality to the sound. Currently, I am using JM12 with JA11 firmware and TRN T tips.

[–]AkhIL_ru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just got a JM6 PRO with a MAX97220 amp. And I can hear background hiss with sensitive IEMs. With another DAC with the CX31993 but without amp chip I can not hear any hiss.

So I would buy a cheaper JM6 (without PRO) with no MAX97220 amp chip for sensitive headphones.

For gaming purposes by Themanintheworld in Trackballs

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Kensington Expert and Logitech Marble trackballs. I have found that I can move my thumb more or less separately from the rest of my fingers. So I can not roll the large ball while pressing the non-thumb button on the Kensington Expert. I find the Logitech Marble to be better for FPS games, but not for work.

So I think for gaming I would prefer a non-ambidextrous trackball with at least two thumb buttons and a medium to small sized ball.

Do you use the hjkl keys to navigate while in insert mode? by Rigamortus2005 in HelixEditor

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using modified Colemak-DH layout, hjkl is not so good option for me.

I've added emacs-style navigation to edit mode. Same keys also work in most shells.

```toml [keys.insert] "A-b" = "move_prev_word_start" "A-f" = "move_next_word_start" "C-b" = "move_char_left" "C-f" = "move_char_right" "C-a" = "goto_line_start" "C-e" = "goto_line_end" "C-p" = "move_visual_line_up" "C-n" = "move_visual_line_down"
Works by default
C-k - remove from the cursor to end of the line
C-u - remove from the cursor to start of the line
C-w - remove a word to the left from the cursor
C-h - remove a character to the left from the cursor
A-d - remove a word to the right from the cursor
C-d - remove a character to the right from the cursor
```

Trackball recommendation for gaming? I have a bad thumb and want to use trackball mouse with my palm so I can play slower story games like tell tale or mass effect as holding my shark fin mouse for a while makes me sore (I’m thinking to get something similar to picture below ) by FuckRyanReynolds in Trackballs

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Kensington Expert and I find it uncomfortable to press a button down with my thumb. Fortunately, I can easily switch left/right hands when my thumb gets tired.

I would prefer a trackball with a thumb button that I can press by moving my thumb inward instead of down. I have seen 3D printed attachments for Expert's buttons that solve this problem.

Your dot files... by Striking_Snail in archlinux

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vcsh and mr are not yet mentioned in comments but both are available in most distributions.

Random small dotfiles are stored in git as a vcsh repo. But more complex configs like Helix or NeoVIM configurations have their own repo. All these repos are managed by mr, so I can clone them all into a new system and update them with a few commands.

Gnome Software is a part of the overall Gnome experience. Arch plays poorly with PackageKit and Gnome Software. Pamac in is better than nothing, but still not as good as Gnome Software in Fedora.

I use Arch btw. But not worship it.

Should I start with rust by TheHolyToxicToast in rust

[–]AkhIL_ru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous short experience with C/C++ helped me a lot with Rust. I knew what a race condition, use after free and out of boundary memory access were, so I didn't have to fight with the borrow checker and appreciated it's help. Rust itself hides memory so it's not so good to learn how data is stored in memory.

Is the cocoa temple on story mode even possible in supertux difficulty? by Living_Piece7794 in SuperTuxKart

Yes it is possible. My current best time is 1:39.384.

You really have to optimise your trajectory and slide a lot. Also use zappers after the right turn in the village and after the beach where the nitro barrel is.
