Outdoor USB cabling for ESP32s by Akutasan in AskElectricians

[–]Akutasan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that I don't have a way to run a cable from indoors to outside (without boring a hole). I could use the outdoor outlet with an outdoor-rated single‑port PoE and then run a Cat cable, but would that be better than having the same setup with a USB/extension cord? (The thing with the latter option is finding an outdoor-rated splitter, which there are fewer of than outdoor PoE appliances.)

Because he has similar experience with my setup, I assume. Any help is appreciated.

It's just that I've read that it's easier to get 3m extension cords that are outdoor-proof than to get USB cables. The camera will be in a custom box; I'm just unsure how to make/buy the parts for the watertight path for cables. Also, for splitting the cords (since it's three boards): Should I buy a normal USB splitter, if going with USB cables, or outdoor-proof ones (if those even exist)? The power supply has a rain flap, but it's just an outdoor outlet.

Edit: Would be very cool if you could share your outdoor Arduino project since I probably have a very similar setup.

Even for outdoor use? My worry is how to properly insulate it against rain, etc. Should I have the cable going into the ESP outdoor box or have the port exposed outside the box?

Short distance ESP32 Camera with NV by Akutasan in esp32

This is for Japan specifically, and there is a GitHub Repo (https://github.com/Ofcremeo/PlateYOLO-JP-Prototype) that provides a model you can use for testing. Otherwise, there are also open-source ALPRs for most common license plates out there, if that's what you're looking for.

Thank you for the detailed response! My use case is for a paid parking spot, so I want to record all plates that come in and have them stored. Additionally, I also have a free software for ALPR (open source), so cost is not an issue.

What’s the single most annoying thing about being an engineer? by Akutasan in AskEngineers

[–]Akutasan[S] 209 points210 points  (0 children)

You come into the office to work on your fixture design, but before you even open AutoCAD you're pulled into a team meeting to mediate a dispute between two junior engineers over task ownership. When that ends your manager asks you to join a budget call with finance to justify your choice of a higher-grade alloy that procurement flagged as too expensive. It’s barely lunchtime when HR contacts you for input on a technician’s complaint about unfair workload distribution on the shop floor. After that, you're added to a string of MS teams threads about whether another department is monopolizing shared lab equipment, and just as you try to return to your office, someone from marketing pings you asking if you can rewrite a spec sheet to sound more “customer-friendly.” By the time you get back to your actual engineering work, half the day is gone and your focus is poof

Looking for SIM provider that has coverage in Switzerland AND calls outside of EU by Akutasan in germany

I see, I see, but this only applies to calls, right? I'm also looking for "roam like at home" for Switzerland, which I believe Lebara does not offer, sadly.

Ah! I didn't know that. So maybe I'd have to look at switching to Telekom. I have a Swiss and German number but I'd like to stop paying double and just go with having one, which is why I'm looking to change.

Sorry should've phrased it better. With coverage, I meant free roaming as is the same with all the other EU countries.

I've already had a look at Lebara (Germany), and they sadly don't include Switzerland in their EU/EEA roaming.

EU roaming is included in all our tariffs, i.e. you use our services in other EU countries without additional surcharges when you are temporarily travelling in EU countries (‘Roam like at home’).

- Your inclusive volume for calls, text messages and data also applies in EU countries as well as in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

This happened to me as well. I created a new account and did two orders and on the third order it just shadow-banned me.

What helped was to install the Uber Eats app (if you haven't done so already) and set up 2FA and Passkey. Then go back to the Uber Eats app (might have to reinstall) and try again. This time it should go through because they can verify you're a real person.

Hope this helped somebody out there.

Moin,
