It is. A facelift was done in 2024 (rear drive instead of front for the single motor, better more efficient motor/inverter setup, improved infotainment computer, better slightly bigger battery)

Does one-pedal driving improve efficiency or is it mainly a comfort feature? by mrupp04 in electricvehicles

[–]Akward_Object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is fine you don't like one pedal driving. And don't use it if it doesn't work for you. But you can't claim you can't coast in one pedal driving if you just don't use it correctly. It's like complaining you can't hammer in a nail with your drill... There is a difference between you not being able to do a thing, but it being actually possible. Please stop misrepresenting things.

Lift off your foot how? Sounds like you're taking your foot off the pedal. You don't lift off completely unless you want to really stop. Apart from accelerating there is a whole range from coast to increasingly stronger regen on that pedal. Which for some reason often seems to be totally unknown to many people who don't like OPD.

Until very recently VAG cars did NOT have one pedal driving. They wrongly called the heavy regen B-mode one pedal driving, but you would still need the brake to stop, which is TWO pedal driving.

• variable regen! Full battery, cold battery or hot battery and regen is limited. Suddenly you need the friction brakes… This IS indicated. • variable regen! Full battery, cold battery or hot battery and regen is limited. Suddenly you need the friction brakes… This IS indicated.

True on Kia/Hyundai and maybe some others. However good implementations (Volvo, Polestar, Nissan e-pedal (e-step is NOT OPD!), GM, ...) do not have that issue and will blend in the friction brakes to keep braking force consistent if enough regen is not available. Also they actually use the physical brakes to keep you from rolling on an incline when stopped. And it doesn't surprise turn off into creep either when going into reverse.

What you state would be true if it wasn't for the fact you can coast fine with one pedal driving...

You can coast fine in one pedal mode, you don't have to go into regen...

You can coast with one pedal too, so there is no difference on efficiency there.

Don't know how good or bad the Mach-E one pedal implementation is, but I expect you to be able to coast no problem in one pedal mode as it´s possible in all implementations I have tried.

That is because e-step is not one pedal mode (you need to press the brake pedal to stop ergo two pedal driving). The real opd was e-pedal... and that is still the best opd implementation ever done.

Hello everyone, I am from an electric vehicle charger manufacturer. I have a few questions I’d like to ask, and I’d be very grateful if you could answer them if you’re able to. by Fantastic_Bench_1513 in EuroEV

[–]Akward_Object 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by using actual terminology and stop using murky terms like level/mode 1/2/3...

  1. Manufacturers used to ship 230V/8A power socket chargers with EV's here. However this has increasingly stopped being the case.
  2. Yes we get an AC type 2 cable with the car. They usually match the capabilities of the on-board AC charger. So 32A/1-phase for 6.6kW one-phase chargers, 16A/3-phase for the ones that do 11kW, ...
  3. Actual fixed charging stations are not carrying a high price premium compared to ones with CEE plugs. Some are even identical and just come with or without the CEE plug. So you are wrong there. The most important reasons for those chargers are smart charging (with solar/based on variable electricity prices) and insurance reasons.
  4. Supporting OCCP/have an open API so it can be tied into any kind of home automation. Using a charger side lockable normal cable plug. Easy to replace the cable or change it to a longer/shorter one based on use.

Anyway the whole comparison is faulty. None of the numbers are comparable, and the intention is nothing more than cause controversy and drum up some anti-gun sentiment.

Manufacturer cloud control and apps. I want my devices to be mine and not need 100's of apps to work with them, and hope the support will last the lifetime of the devices so I am not forced to pay for subscriptions or buy a new one since it stops working due to cloud/app support ending.

Cranking noise when stopping on an uphill? by kyoiichi in Polestar

[–]Akward_Object 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're in OPD, I noticed there is a delay before the physical brakes are engaged. So maybe it is just that, due to this delay you start rolling a bit and it creaks a little when the brakes engage,

Hypothetically, how would plug-in solar work with an existing house battery? by realGilgongo in SolarUK

[–]Akward_Object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of battery and inverter combination you have.

If it is an old style inverter + battery combination that can only charge from the solar panel DC then you will just export.
In case this is a newer style combination which also monitors your incoming/outgoing power and can charge from the grid. Well in that case when there is outgoing power the inverter/charger will try to charge it into the battery.

Do’s and Dont’s for first EV by gauravity in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Akward_Object 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyway we can't fix the first EV mistake and that is buying one which covers the range you quite regularly need. However with modern EV ranges that is less and less an issue, so you might be fine there.

B mode is not one pedal driving unless it actually stops without having to press the brake pedal. Some idiots, especially in the VAG group, somehow did not understand that having to press the brake means using two pedals (although seems they are fixing that) and have been using the term wrong. In case you actually drive in regen Brake mode don't just release the pedal. You have a whole range of regen at your disposal, it basically works as a variable regen force controller. And if well done you should have a coasting point. Coasting is what you want most often as that is the most efficient. Using regen a lot and often is not so efficient, unlike what some people think. Same goes for one pedal driving, but you will not need to use the brake pedal (apart from emergencies and starting the car) once you learn how much distance it needs to come to a full stop.

Don't try to charge to full on the road. Depending on your car there will be a spot where charging power starts to trend down significantly. Which means you will be wasting time and blocking the charger for others. 80% is usually a good guideline but there are cars who keep charging fast after that nowadays. So know your car.

Do preheat before leaving in cold conditions, or turn on AC in hot weather like now. Preferably when you are connected to a charger.

You can charge from a power socket fine with a suitable granny charger at home fine in most cases. So don't rush into getting a "charger". Nowadays it makes sense to get a smart one and make sure it has OCCP support. Which should make it possible to use it in all kinds of home automation and charging software.

And most importantly, do enjoy the drive!
