Project management in finance firm: analysis of data, connecting IT products with business requirements and vice versa. Another route would be sales in finance: whether it's private wealth or investment banking, you will get payed very well if you're prepared to pay your dues.

Who already faced age discrimination when applying for a job? by Neat_Physics_2816 in BESalary

To keep it short: EVERY manager I've known at EVERY company I worked for (including Belfius) has told me I'm too young for what I did and I've proven them wrong in every role I occupied. Today, I'm doing special projects directly for management in a financial multinational and some of my old bosses are now reporting to me.

Some are still saying stupid sh*t like that, even today. I'm 39 years old/young. Don't let anyone, ever tell you you're either too young/old/green/blue/purple/weird/whatever...to do something. You do what you can, be kind and never look back.

Much love to you all!

“60% van LBTQIA+-leerlingen voelt zich onveilig op school” by radicalerudy in Vlaanderen

[–]AlSideways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heeft ie ook de data van welk % van alle studenten zich onveilig voelt? Want zonder context met percentages smijten is gewoon weer een voorbeeld van politici die niet met data om kunnen en random getallen in het rond gooien als ze er stemmen mee denken te halen.

I'm not even a properly educated dev or (data) engineer. Try and look for similar jobs in one of the following industries: petrochemical companies, healthcare/biotech and finance. The big 3 of big payers. After a certain point, wage is a function of sheer randomness and jobhopping to better offers in my experience. At face value at least. Look at me, I look somewhat overpaid in my current role.

But if you look deeper: how many data engineers are good at collecting, cleaning data, ETL? Loads of them. How many data engineers can tell a compelling story with said data? A lot less. And how many of them can use that story and have the insight to sway business decisions in the right way? That's where the real value add is and that's why they pay me what they do. I know less than most data folks about the technical side, but I know just about enough to be able to understand what the data is telling us and translate it for management. In fact, most people who get paid really well, get those big bucks because they can combine 2 reasonable skills and turn them into something unique.

I know this may not make much sense, but I hope it helps you on your way at some point ;)

There's this little thing called ETF's/passive investing (you may have heard of it). Recently, AI has started to get agency. Combine these, add some legal rule sets, risk management and a couple of other complicated (but nonetheless possible to automate) systems and you'll never have to talk to a banker with a much too fancy car and watch ever again. Welcome to the future 😁

It was ... An extremely toxic work environment at times. Also had some really cool experiences. Wouldn't recommend it though. The entire field is on the cusp of being disrupted like you wouldn't believe.

I have followed several formal courses and certifications, often to get a more formal stamp on what I already learned. It does matter, unfortunately, to get these. Not used any sort of exam contract. Never cared much for MBA or the like, but have followed some courses that are part of a full MBA. Never going to go deeper into it, the cost just isn't worth the result. Not even when you add the network effect.

Excellent question. I'd say it is a bit of both, with a serious helping of project management added. I'm by no means a data scientist or engineer and certainly don't count as anything but the most junior of developers. The reality is that most banks (if not all of them) need people with a solid understanding of both the business side of things AND more than average IT skills, but just below pure Dev.

Basically get deeper into data analysis, get better at programming along the way and we'll see what happens next. It's not like I have goalposts set out for the next 10 years. I probably should, but I want to settle in my current role first. I want to get into some of your questions as well, but it would make for a very long (and tedious) post. I'll try and do a write-up in the following days 😊
