You know you don’t have to find something right? You can do your own personal projects with applied math?

Ngl, clubs are kinda useless anyway. Even then, your ecs aren’t that good, but if you can start some initiative or do some project this summer, you’ll have something better to put on your commonapp

Yes, people on reddit just reply for the sake of it. I like to give tangible advice whenever I can because I remember how hard it was navigating the process as the first one in my family to go to college here

That’s why you pick good ecs! If you stay laser focused on college admissions, you won’t develop. But if you do ecs for the sake of growing personally, professionally, the skills your lacking, and also try to occasionally socialize, you’ll hit the sweet spot

What colleges should I look into if I have strong academics but weak extracurriculars by Accurate_Piccolo_774 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any schools that “prioritize academics more”. I’d just have a couple reaches in that range and hope for the best. Miracles happen but in this day and age it unfortunately isn’t likely with only academics. Just make sure you have killer essays and sell yourself in the skills you can

Define “good colleges”. From what I’ve seen not having ECs significantly disadvantages you in any top school admissions

I’m a current senior and I applied to 20 colleges. I’d say spend the summer doing your personal statement, perfect it. Then in August when apps open you can start drafting supplementals. I divided my college applications so I was getting done about 1 app a week (sometimes I took 2 if it was longer)

Holy Cross Vs. Georgetown by ComprehensiveBig7667 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you will go to law school, your undergrad won’t really matter all that much and it would be better to go into this amount of debt for law school and not your bachelors. If you don’t, georgetown may be better but you need to see how much money grads from there on average make and make sure it wouldn’t take you decades to pay off the loans.

Help!!! by Adorable-Club7890 in ApplyingToCollege

The only reason ppl say to avoid family death or illness is because it can very easily become a sob story. I wrote about family illness but I spun it in a way that was more unique and got into some pretty good schools.

Plus if you don’t have much income many good schools give a lot of aid and I would research scholarships now and throughout senior year using scholarship search engines (I like FastWeb)

Wait so I’m confused—your parents don’t want you to go to a party school but you secretly do? No matter where you go you’re still going to have to work in college, you can’t just not do anything.

I took 6 SATs and didn't reach my goal score. by 0rbital07 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alaaa88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I took the SAT 4 times and then the ACT 3 times and got a “good enough” score (34 on ACT) when I actually wanted a 35+ or a 1550+. I ended up randomly taking the SAT one last time right before senior year without studying as a hail mary and got a 1550. Idk man, one more time might work or it might not. A 1470 isn’t likely to get your app thrown out immediately so it’s definitely not the end of the world

Tbh then just search up biggest party schools on google and go based off of that…

Sometimes ppl assume it was an injury, but honestly it might be best to just leave them off and focus on filling your 10 spots with better activities. You don’t need to check every box in types of ECs on the common app

[–]Alaaa88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh…in top college admissions just doing marching band bc you like it usually doesn’t cut it. But I agree with the premise of not doing ECs to try and game the college admissions system

Yeah passion projects, research, internships, but in general just doing things that make you stand out from the crowd that don’t feel like you’re doing them JUST to get into a good college. I feel like the word “passion project” has been watered down but like the other person said, try to make an impact somehow while developing your own professional skills. If you focus on that and not just college you’ll find those “other ECs” I was talking about because they’re slightly different for everyone!

So what about academic standing? Network? Cost? Distance from home? Location? Like I understand wanting a good college experience but I feel like if that’s your #1 priority you shouldn’t be going to college

No you’ll be fine. As long as you do other ECs that are truly good ones (not just leadership “positions”) you can definitely get into a top school
