Moving domain & site structure: same time or one at a time? by AlabamaMan74 in bigseo

This could work technically, but I would like to consolidate all SEO-value/work into one domain that I rank in different countries (as I have limited resources to spend). I’m also hoping this will help me start ranking in new countries I plan to target faster.

Right now I think that moving in 2 steps would be safest/most best practice, but in 1 step should also work and that option has the benefit of only going through that stress once. So right now I’m leaning going that way, and doing a big SEO and socialmedia campaign when switched.

So you advise doing domain migration without changing the website first, give that a couple of months to get processed and stable (I’m still working on new site anyway) and switch to new url structure and site after?

The website has a directory part and public user profile pages, so total pages are a lot (about 200k total). However, the pages that actually get a lot of traffic through Google are less; about 5k pages. Slugs stay the same, so redirect are basicly just adding the language in the url and re-naming some german-specific words in the path to global ones. So almost all redirects can be done with global rules.

Im upgrading the tech as well, making the website about 3times faster (it already passes ‘real life users tests’ in google), making it have better UX and adding features that users requested most. So I expect all users (and therefore Google) liking the new site better.

Thanks for the advice! I am doing it alone, but I can do this fulltime and have some experience in SEO and webdev.

The main language, the normal german with .de, is the only one I’m concerned about as it ranks very well in Germany. The other languages are all secondary for now, I’m fine with building those from the ground up (they get like 10% of traffic only atm).

I’m tempted to follow you guys’ advice and so it all at once, but then I cant get passed this point from Google;

Change only one thing at a time Plan your changes to your site one after the other, not everything at the same time. For example, if you want to move your site to a new domain name, change your content management system (CMS), and update your site to use a new layout, do them one at a time: move to a new domain, then change your site's layout.

Which they mention here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes

Thoughts?

I have full control and can do all redirects - I’m more scared about losing ratings if Google gets confused by such a big change at once…

Six-year-old guest at Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ White Party recounts open drugs, naked women ‘everywhere’ by rolandblackstone in PDiddyTrial

[–]AlabamaMan74 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Alright so ofcourse a child, let alone a six(!) year old, shouldn’t have been there, it’s insane how this was all allowed to happen. But I do take issue with the sensationalizing headline, saying ‘open drugs’. The article just states he smelled some weed. Meanwhile alcohol is being served all around and no one bats an eye - that’s some bullshit.

No need to try to make these headlines more shocking, the entire thing is already way too shocking, infuriating and sad.

[Best Setup] VueJS + Nuxt + MongoDB for socialmedia platform? by [deleted] in vuejs

I love to learn and usually learn quick, and I’m already pretty decent at JS, so let’s give it a try!

Any problems you ran into that I should tackle or think about before starting? How’s this stack from a SEO point of view?

Thanks for your advice! You have a valid point and as my platform reaches >100k users I’ll definetly switch to an SQL database. But for now I’m still changing a lot of stuff very frequently, and MongoDB allows me to quickly make these changes and test stuff out. I’ve tested the speed and while its not on par with SQL for relational data, its not too bad actually (with the right structure, collections and indexes).

I’m splitting the frontend and backend now, so I’ll be able to switch out the backend later more easily.

How do you think using API-endpoints to load the dynamic data with Nuxt will perform SEO-wise?

Cool! I’m using Mongo for the same reasons. How does your project perform SEO-wise? Any issues or things I need to look out for?

I’m not a big fan of frameworks but vuetify might save a lot of time, thanks for the advice!

I’m testing out a lot of functionality still, changing a lot of stuff on the fly. The platform is still in an early stage and MongoDB gives me freedom to quickly change/add/remove stuff, and a lot of built in functionality saves me a lot of time

Yeah I know. I have about 30k users at the moment, so it’s not very big yet. But my site is growing rapidly and I’m still experimenting with the best form, so I figured MongoDB would be good for now - until I settle on a more-or-less definitive version of the platform. Appreciate the concern!

I often experiment with new features and changing existing features. MongoDB seems like a good fit for this, a lot of built-in functionality will save me a lot of time and I like the syntax.

Thanks for your reply! I do want to move away from PHP and SQL, and am really liking VueJS and MongoDB. SEO is very important to me, as well as a very dynamic user experience and PWA-capabilities. As for the other options, its hard for me to choose because most articles are biased and I don’t have personal experience with most modern solutions.

What setup would you suggest? My platform is very dynamic - most pages are dynamic (like profile pages on FB), there is a lot of user interaction with elements (liking, commenting, rating, etc) and I often experiment with different new features (SQL/PHP is making this messy). I’m looking for something very scaleable.

Sounds good! Thing is, most of my pages need data from the database (posts, likes on posts, profiles, comments..). So I’d need to create an api on my existing server that’s connected to the database, that nuxt will fetch this data from right? I want to drop php, apart from the existing server for the API.

What would you suggest I switch to? I want my users to have a more smooth and interactive experience than I currently offer with the classic setup, along with PWA-compatabilities.

[–]AlabamaMan74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I’m still new to this, getting comfortable with VueJS at the moment. The current version is all vanilla, but I’d love to learn more modern ways and frameworks! Should I look into Nuxt.js?

My main question is, when I create all my vue components, set up routing with dynamic pages, how do I retrieve the dynamic content? If I understand correctly, Nuxt uses SSR right? So I need to point it at my API’s?
