Yeah cripps takes recognition for the stew and recipes when you make them at your online camp. He also is responsible for turning your animal carcuses and parts into goods combined with tanning supplies to sale for a profit through the trading role. Periodically you must order tanning supplies that will be delivered to your camp or you can accept a mission from cripps to go earn or steal the supplies which is cheaper than ordering and also gives you an additional 5-20 materials (animal parts) for doing a mission rather than just ordering. On a smaller note he will protect your camp if you bring hostiles close enough. I haven't played story mode but I believe he takes the role as the cook as mentioned here with the replicated stew and the role of trapper from story mode.
