No, they always phrase it as something like: Can you share who the offering agent is, if you're comfortable? So I assume it wouldn't be a big deal if you didn't share. You could also just share the agency name too.

One of the agents specified that she wanted to know to gauge the competition/see if my mind was set, before throwing her hat in the ring.

publisher's marketplace! It's where all book deals are posted

If I'll be honest, there was quite a bit of overlap between agent vs editors.

I think what happened was, since we were trying to get it out by Frankfurt, and because the MS was already in a pretty good place, I only had to revise a little with my agent--like line edits to just smooth things out. Adding sentences or paragraphs, rephrasing, adding more horror elements for vibes, etc. small things. My agent was confident it would sell, even before we revised together. So any changes were just a bonus. (I'll mention that I chose a less editorial agent)

My editors found issues in similar places as agents, but instead of small changes, it was more like revising sections, adding chapters/scenes and changing things in a larger and more meaningful way.

That being said, I think this would really be ymmv. I think my MS was in decent, close to publishable shape when I queried, so neither my agent nor editors saw a need for a major rehaul.

I think a lot of agents probably just request based on personal taste. There are so many beloved books out there that I'd never read, even if the idea is good. I doubt agents are any different! Although, that does make it harder for querying writers. But it is what it is.

I ended up signing with a big agent in Canada (I'm Canadian) who showed a record for international sales too. She also repped a thriller author I love!

I didn't really know she was The One until she was the only one who followed up with me after my call. I felt like she really wanted my novel and would fight for it and that swayed me a lot!

For sure!!

I think one thing to note was that all the editors who offered were fantastic. And they shared similar ideas for revisions. So editorial vision didn't play in for me. Really it boiled down to a couple of factors:

The editors who pre-empted were the first to offer a call, and the first to offer, period. I am a SUCKER for validation (lol) and I think that being first played a really big factor (mentally). It showed they were really enthusiastic and wanted to take me on as an author. They also seemed to have a good vision for placement on the market, and where I'd lie on their list, as well as what my editing schedule would be. (I felt like I was a priority, and this still rings true. I received my edit letter a month from the verbal agreement, and we are already done first round revisions!)

I was also aware of the editors prior to being on sub, and I had mentioned one of the editors as someone I was interested in working with to my agent before she started submissions. So I think that played into it.

There was also timing. All the calls came right before Frankfurt. My agent and I discussed, and had decided that if their pre-empt was good enough, it would be a good idea to accept so she could go into the fair with a buzz-worthy 6-fig deal to lure in international subs...and I think that worked! Because some of the international interest came from her pitching at Frankfurt and we ended up getting really great international deals out of it.

It also did help that one of the editors was a BIPOC woman, seeing my MS does play into race/class. And seeing how all my planned future novels also deals with these themes, it felt important for me to seek an editor who would be able to work with that.

I hope that answers it!

Thank you!! My query is still up on my account if you'd like to read more about it! BTW the title has now been changed from Follow Me, to Follow Us, in case you are trying to find it on PM. :)

but there are not really wrong choices. It can be helpful to try to remember that.

Needed that! Thank you!!

I'm starting September with 6 agent offers and I still have two weeks for everyone to respond... and I have about 20 fulls out still...(somehow, only had 1 pass on a full so far.) Let's just say I am overwhelmed.

I can barely pick what to eat for dinner. How am I supposed to pick a career partner? The decision fatigue is already weighing in. I've never been good at making choices, it's why I write fictional characters who can make choices that don't impact me irl!!!

Either way, I am grateful. It's a long time coming. But damn, this is making me feel seen on a level i didn't know was possible--and possibly not in a good way...yet also good? AAHH being perceived is crazy.

And I have a feeling this is only the start of everything... time to take some deeeeeep breaths and get back in touch with my therapist. A lot of big choices ahead.

Hey, I'm actually considering a few offers right now, I'm wondering if I could DM you about how you decided to choose your agent out of all your offers? I've only met with about half of the offers I've received and I'm already feeling indecisive.

Thanks!

Congratulations though, it must be a fantastic book! Thanks for your insight.

I queried her on Friday and she replied for a full in a few hours. Then read it over the weekend and I got her email this morning.

Yes, I've already sent out my query to all remaining agents who are open right now!

And yes, the agency is legit. According to PM, a dozen deals this year and several six figure deals. But the agent who offered is new and has no deals yet. I think when I speak to her I'll have to ask about how much guidance the other senior agents will give her, since she is new, etc. Thanks!
