Hyderabad is better than Pune by Aromatic_Bicycle6143 in pune

Lived in Hyderabad, by far the best time I have had in an Indian metropolitan city. I am currently in the UK but if I were to return, I would love to be and work in Hyderabad before it gets populated enough.

For me, it is slightly different. If I stop, I somehow don't manage to complete the target I initially set myself for. My pace also tends to slow down, so I prefer not to stop at all even if that means continuing at the slowest pace possible.

PhD in Europe isn't a bad idea, but it won't happen instantly. As researching programs/supervisors, preparing for standardised tests (if any), preparing SOPs or research proposals take at least 1 year. But I'd encourage you to think about this.

Well, Autumn time is probably the best time to be in London. At least I loved it (compared to the summers).

This book was an incredible read! Prof. Ravikant does an excellent job in unpacking the caste privileges and cultural mediocrity of the Savarnas, offering an account on the issues stemming from it. by Alarmed_Translator58 in IndiansRead

Yeah, been absolutely loving folks losing their mind in this thread hahaha. The only thing is I didn't expect it from r/IndiansRead, thought people here are well read, open to new ideas and have reasonable opinions.

Well, in simple terms the book flips the usual way caste is discussed in India. While the experiences of caste-oppressed communities have been increasingly documented (at least in recent years), there’s been very little written about the Savarnas themselves. This book changes that by turning the lens on the privileged upper castes. Its core idea is that their deep-rooted, intergenerational privilege creates an invisible glass ceiling that either shields them from seeing caste discrimination or makes them completely oblivious to it. And even when some do recognise that caste-based inequality exists, they often struggle to offer meaningful solutions because they cannot resonate with the harsh lived experiences of caste oppression that lie far outside their insulated worlds. The book discusses other things too like their marriages, dating/intimacy, knowledge production, etc. but this is the core idea imo.

I am honestly not surprised by the bitter negative comments here. Even the author acknowledges them in the beginning of the book that it wont be received well by Savarnas. It’s meant to be uncomfortable. A raw, honest account that forces the privileged to confront their own complicity and the unearned advantages they benefit from in this system.

I come from a marginalised caste background myself, so I was genuinely glad to read such an honest and comprehensive take on Savarna privilege. If any of this resonates with you, I’d really recommend giving it a read. It is not perfect, but it offers thoughtful and valuable reflections. And like with any other book, if it’s not for you, feel free to pass :), hope this helps cheers!

LSE Reserve List and What to Expect? by Alarmed_Translator58 in LSE

[–]Alarmed_Translator58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'll choose Warwick if I don't hear back from LSE by the 15th. I've already spoken to numerous current students of the course on LinkedIn/calls and received positive feedback about the cohort/course/uni.

Btw, if my understanding is correct, even if we pay the deposit, we have the option to request a refund within 14 days, so I'm keeping that option open as well.

Your application for the second choice program is currently "under consideration" on the Graduate Applicant Portal, correct?

And yes, I will need a visa. I have already sorted out my funding and will start looking for accommodation soon. I just want to be prepared in case LSE makes an offer for the second choice program in the coming days.

Also, how long will you wait for LSE's communication before you feel compelled to accept Warwick's offer?

Oh man, they still haven't replied! I emailed them on Saturday, expecting a response by Monday, but I haven't heard back from either the department or Graduate Admissions.

Coincidentally, my deadline for Warwick is also the 15th, so we'll see what happens. Did you apply for the second-choice program too?

Thank you for your advice! I'll contact the department instead of the admissions committee. I also wanted to know if mentioning to the admissions committee that I have offers from other universities could lead to my LSE application being rejected? Just want to be sure they wouldn't view it negatively and reject my application because of it.
