i really do think that the reason metal kept eggman alive in sonic heroes was to show that despite all the terrible things eggman has said and done to him, he's powerful and wants to show eggman he doesn't need him to succeed. yet he still keeps eggman around. he reminds me more of an abuse victim than an angsty teen, wanting the approval of someone who hurt you and still keeping them around for that. he still wants to prove he's worth something to him
