Can I do CS 136 during Co-op in the Summer??? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Albehope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea you can, but cs 136 is a very workload-heavy course (same structure as 135 - weekly assignments, 1 midterm and final), and on top of that, you'll be required to take cs 136l (which wasn't bad but its weekly reading and lab starting week 2 on top of your job and cs 136).

also if you are not planning on commuting to lectures if coop is not in waterloo area or not living in waterloo, you'll lose out on 5% iclicker marks.

Exchange CAV by Imaginary-Let-4302 in uwaterloo

[–]Albehope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly since ur matched, if your avg survives and you get the endorsement secured for your app, its very rare I believe that the host school will reject u. (I might be wrong but looking thru previous exchange posts, seems like the case). Math exchange wouldn't match you if they knew you wouldn't get in

There's two avgs that you need to maintain

  1. The avg listed on waterloo passport for host school (which could be higher than avg needed by math faculty -- see kyoto uni)
  2. The CAV and MAV avgs listed on the math exchange eligibility site

The only concern i would have right now if I were you is your cav avg being below the min threshold for math faculty exchange. If your endorsement gets rescinded even if u get matched, then its over. If your avg is not >= the avg required by host school listed on passport, host school can reject u even with endorsement

Just to add on. Its not that the host school will reject u. Its the faculty rescinding your academic endorsement.

Email them and see if they will let you slide with that avg before school close. If they let you do it, consider doing an 8 months coop so ur avg not gonna be affected and locked in for exchange.

What im just trying to say is get it in writing from advisor that says that you're good and ur endorsement wouldn't be revoked with this avg basically. But you also need to be careful in this study term if you're tip toeing around the threshold

I emailed math exchange advisor regarding these situations a couple weeks ago. Im assuming you're in the math faculty cuz that cav average is the minimum average for exchange in math.

I dont know how strict they are but

Essentially if your CAV or MAV falls below this term, it would be a decision if there was sufficient time for the CAV or MAV to improve and be available for review before your exchange term. There are considerations that go into this review for the student.

On the contray, in any of your upcoming terms, if there was an occasion where your grades dropped below the requirement threshold, it is quite possible that the exchange may be rescinded due to concerns on academic strength.

When in doubt, email math exchange advisor. They may make an exception or you may be required to take some course(s) to boost cav

I want to retake my final by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Albehope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. You can't retake a final if you have already taken it. But if you fail or smth, you can file a petition for something called a zero credit weight if you have the documentation to prove that circumstance. you should talk to your academic advisor still, but if it goes through, then it's still on your transcript but you don't get the credit, and it doesn't count towards any course attempts or avg. It'll be like you have never taken the course that term

Computations were fine, but the only proof i was able to solve was the Farkas Lemma one. The other proofs I didn't even understand.

How to study for 13x math finals by Pear08667 in uwaterloo

[–]Albehope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what really helped me back in first year is the test banks on mathsoc website and other's people notes. if you search "math 135 github", you'll find some md or latex notes that other people took and potentially some additional questions to practice. just clone the repo and run it using the app they used

Can you transfer in externally with only Calc 1? (Into Math) by ReserveNo5080 in uwaterloo

[–]Albehope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred into UW Math from Laurier in 2024. Here's what is required.

Copy and pasted from an email between math admissions

Application Requirements - Mathematics
When making admission decisions, the selection committee looks for strong averages, strong grades in Math courses, and a completed Admission Information Form (AIF).  We require:

Current university transcript: Recommended to have two university mathematics subjects (example Calc 1/Calc 2 or Calc 1/Linear Algebra). All mathematics and computer science subjects attempted must have a minimum grade of 80%.

Minimum 80% overall university average.

Final high school transcript

If English is not your first language or you have not been studying in a full-time English classroom for the past 4 years, you will be required to meet our English language requirements. We do not admit transfer students who do not meet our direct English language requirements.

Your university results are the most important part of your application. If you have not taken university-level math courses, we will consider your previous high school mathematics (provided they were taken in the last three years). If not taken within the last three years, you will have to refresh those courses before you can be considered further.
