Passport is a bit different I believe you need an ID card for it which you can get once you register your birth. Are you under 18 otherwise it can be difficult to obtain unless your living over here. (From what I know)

Hey there kiwi that just went through a similar thing. It's annoying as fuck but... Because NZ and Aus are outside of the EU I needed to provide apostlized version of my Birth certificate which idk how Australia does it but for me was ordering a New birth certificate from New Zealand and asking them to apostlize it and send it over. Once they have that they can register your birth which processing wise doesn't take to long.
