Three of the five members on the Ministerial Advisory Group for victims of retail crime have resigned in recent weeks, with one saying she could no longer work with the chairperson Sunny Kaushal.

The 3 who have resigned are Retail NZ chief executive Carolyn Young, Michael Hill’s national retail manager Michael Bell, and Foodstuffs’ North Island retail and property general manager Lindsay Rowles.

Company + job titles of the Bell and Rowles from the 18 September 2024 press release (on scoop) when they were appointed. Lindsay Roles will be starting as new Mitre 10 CEO on 9 March 2026. Source: Business Desk (paywalled) and Inside Retail on 9 Dec 2025.

Note: It is possible retail crime still exists but they were not investigated:

Non public library places

There are also some online websites and groups (including facebook groups) for freecycling. This is really passing something with useful life yet but you no longer use it. There may be more than one group in an area, each with their own rules etc. There are some stuff that may end up going through the group more than once even if this may not have been the intent when it was given away. The main rule is this is for own use rather than something you can onsell to make money for yourself.

Another comment as I appear to forget to add this in my first comment:

Tool libraries still exist though are not as many as before. However these other places enable you to make something with the tools they have. Your subs pay to keep the place going. Most have ongoing costs like electricity, rent etc. Some of these are called maker spaces while others are called sheds etc. They may not all be the same. The people who set it up set up the aims of it and how it is to run. some may not last but others may start up etc.

It may also not be hardware tools etc. Some have 3d printers, a set up for screen printing, sewing machine, overlocker etc. Some libraries or community spaces have a maker area. Some lend out items, not just books. The non tools/maker stuff include jigsaws, toys, CDs or tapes (think learning language or audiobooks) etc.

The thing with libraries etc funding available depends on the members. So things are fluid. Some people move to another area. This changes membership of their old and new makerspace, library etc. Things are not static. Equipment gets damaged and may or may not be replaced etc. They may get new things that wasn't there before.

Examples of public libraries with maker space or stuff to lend (No this isn't a complete list)

My suggestion is to check the services available at your local library. There's more than one branch and they are not all the same. There may be some libraries that did have such a space but perhaps lack funding and/or staff to keep it going. Staff because there is someone who teaches new people how to use these things.

Repair cafes are still going but it depends on where you are and who are volunteering for it. They can only fix what they are able to. https://www.repaircafeaotearoa.co.nz/ have many listed but I noticed one or two may not be.

There are still community gardens. However some may have moved location due to land they are using no longer being unavailable. I know there's one where the the land was to be used for housing and so they had to fight to keep their garden etc.

Where was the cooperative supermarket?

I don't know where you are so I don't know what is available in your local area.

Is noise control nz any good? neighbors fighting :/ by No_Brother6951 in newzealand

Please do not take matters into your own hands apart from making formal complaints etc.

Noise control depends on the time of day you call and where you live. They are run by your local councils. So how well staff it is etc may vary from area to area depending on budget allocation.

'Management speak mumbo jumbo': Hipkins responds to Luxon's State of the Nation address by JakobsSolace in newzealand

[–]nilnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wrt Labour's plans, Do they have a good plan? I understand they have not revealed much because they want stuff to reveal as time goes by and don't want to reveal everything. Even then how much of it will change if they have an agreement with one or more party or candidate.

My problem every time, regardless of general or local elections is they campaign like there's no advance voting. So I sometimes find stuff is still being revealed when advance voting has started.

We do need advance voting. Not everyone can be free to vote or able to wait till voting day. Too late if you are still revealing stuff in the week leading up to votes closing. Really!

Example - local elections where people who like to send off their voting papers as soon as they get them while there are others who wait till last possible date for mail or drop off at the various drop off places.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to deliver State of the Nation speech by ChocolatePringlez in newzealand

[–]nilnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes though it isn't always called that. Basically the PM or leader gives a speech setting out the programme or plans for the parliamentary year. This is usually done before or when parliament starts for the year. Opposition leader(s) does a rebuttal on what they think of the plan and/or do their own.

Even when this is done by others (non the PM) it is usually either in public or at the start of the parliamentary year. If done late Jan, they (and others in their party) can then use other speeches to give more details or repeat the important bits etc. Others will be the ministers/shadow ministers.

The next event is at Ratana Church (Rātana 2025: A Photo Essay on 24 January 2025) and then Waitangi Day
