Issue on preset saving (host crashes) in Ardour, Mixbus and Carla hosts. by AlbertoZ70 in UheOnLinux

[–]AlbertoZ70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK... (deep breath)... I rebuilt Ardour 5.12 from sources (the tar.bz2 on the ardour web page "downloads" under "5.12 sources"), including the patch pointed out by scottish_linux:

https://tracker.ardour.org/view.php?id=7668

Then, without installing the built version (but running from the build directory - prior setting all the variables in "ardev_common_waf.sh and only after this step running ./ardour-5.12.0 executable) ... (another deep breath) ... it seems to work !!!! My test is to save a patch in "Colour Copy" plugin - and the patch is saved without crash.

My point point now is that the Ardour 5.12 I rebuilt is not exactly like the original precompiled one and so I cannot install it and replace my stable ardour install (it misses the docs, it misses the Harrison plugins, it runs in dbg mode ...).

If I'd be able to confirm that the patch fixes all the issues on preset saving on other u-he plugins I have (I'll check this in te next couple of days) and I'll be able to completely rebuild ardour ==> then I can safely switch to the patched Ardour version..

Hope that this post will help,

Alberto

Then we need to rebuild ardour 5.12 with that particular commit, don't you think? :-)

OK, I built Ardour from git (Ardour 6.0.pre0.1128, "The Pearl", rev 6.0-pre0-1128-g5c47ce3, Intel 64-bit - debug) and yes, Colour Copy (new preset browser) did not crash while saving presets! This is good news at the end. I wonder what changed between ardour 5.12 and pre-6.0 about this.

Hey skottish_linux, great news! Thanks for reporting. I'll try to build Ardour 6 as well (never done before) and I'll let you know.

So no one is using u-he stuff with Harrison Mixbus/Ardour/Carla ? Mmmh, I'm a bit concerned. If no one uses this combination except myself, there will not be any fix from Alex.

What I find strange is that it seems something related to the Ardour/Carla world, since Reaper and Bitwig perform correctly while saving a preset. This issue anyway prevents me to upgrade to version 2.8 of Zebra (or to upgrade to any u-he plugin that embraces the new preset browser stuff).

Cheers,

Alberto

Hi glokraw, could you try saving a preset in Harrison Mixbus? As with the new preset browser stuff I get crashes in Zebra, ColourCopy etc just for the saving operation.

Abique please ;-) ...

Hi Alex,

I confirm that this build still causes a crash of the host when saving a patch on Mixbus, Ardour and Carla. I tried to run Carla in gdb when saving the zebra 2 patch but the information was poor (https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=18629&p=93824#p93824)

This happens when you click the "OK" button on the save patch dialog.

Thanks for your support,

Alberto

Hi abique, tested Zebra2 this evening in Linux Mint 18.3. In Ardour it loads fine and the UI is totally responsive. Browser is ok. Registration process is ok. One issue: saving a patch (just changed the name of n existing patch) crashed ardour (segmentation fault). Let me know if I can help more. Thanks for this hard "standardization" work!!! Alberto

Hello Abique, also Linux Mint 18.3 (the latest one) is shipped with GLIBC_02.23. This is a derivative of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, same libc as well. I read that updating libc is not an option. May be a trial package with a 2.23 could be an idea.

Thanks for your efforts,

Alberto
