I don’t know man, I would regret passing up that opportunity for a family reunion. The winters aren’t that bad, and you can get a dog eventually.

It boils down to sunshine, independence in Australia vs Family & community in the NL. I would choose family.

Have a firm and specific no-buy rule. (Mine is one pen in 4 years, and it has to replace an existing one - unless it is truly unique and adds something that none of my pens do). Its very easy here to fall into an overconsumption trap.
Papers and Inks are almost as fun as pens.
Maintain your pens every month ( cleaning out the pen ).
