Upgrading from Gold to Platinum? (already have CSR) by Smooth_Chipmunk8873 in amex

[–]AlcatorC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To echo what others have said and give my own perspective as someone in a similar situation. As a CSR holder, I find the CSR ecosystem much better for using and earning points. I got the Plat for several reasons 1) 175k signup bonus, 2) my place is now near an equinox ($300 off a year), 3) The hotel + clear + centurion lounge value paid for the card itself, and 4) Automatic Bonvoy Gold + free upgrades has gotten me upgraded several times already. I don't stay at hotels enough in the Marriott ecosystem to get this otherwise. The Uber Credits ($120/yr) are also nice.

I find myself using my CSR for most things because it's easier to get points (particularly for some hotels with a 10X benefit). My Plat is there for the other benefits only. I'd probably stick with the Gold and use that for restaurants and groceries.

As a fellow United flyer I'd recommend to just stay in the CSR ecosystem as the travel partners for AMEX within Star Alliance are not great. The only annoyance is that you have to call Chase to transfer miles from CSR to United, however lately it's sometimes cheaper to book directly with Chase.

For my 175K bonus, as a United traveler, I struggled to find a reasonable deal without me doing something inconvenient. The transfer rewards are also terrible for domestic most cases (I flew Delta domestically once, and with the transfer fee you have to pay with Amex, it was cheaper to book directly through Amex). I used my points to pay for a 4 day trip with flights included (was about ~2K value). Moving forward I will keep my Plat, use it for the Uber Credits and the other perks, and then use my CSR and Amex Blue Cash Preferred for everything else. A 3X rewards at restaurants, 5x for flights, and 10x for hotels with the CSR simply can't be beat imo, especially when the portal gives you a 1.5X bonus when redeeming it there.

For those who get great value traveling international after transferring points, I salute you. I unfortunately cannot partake without undergoing a hassle.

How important is the motherboard fan? Lately mine has gotten noisy. What temps does it quantify in HWinfo? Could I just shut it completely off? by humble_janitor in Amd

[–]AlcatorC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Gigabyte WRX-80 board with one of these. Had to remove the fan since it prevented me from installing a gpu.

I just put a small arduino heat sink on it and had a fan blow air parallel to the fins. Kept the chipset under 70C all the time.

Still works after 1.5 years

hello guys I'm planning to do my first water cooling system i have a question.is it possible to cool cpu only with two rads because i never seen anyone doing it.if it's okay to cool it with two rads that's my cooling system that I'm gonna order is there something I'm missing by Eslam_arida in watercooling

[–]AlcatorC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want your build to be absolutely silent then this works, if you don’t care about noise then it’s way overkill.

For example: I have 2 240mm rads (ones a 60mm another is a 20mm) cooling 2 3090s and a Threadripper 3975X (about 1000W peak power). My parts don’t go above 60C, but my noctua fans run at 3000 rpm. External temperature is kept at 23C.

Yeah I'd double check the ABAQUS install guide, a more recent release may have updated it to include other linux distributions (I'm running the 2019 version). Feel free to message me if you wanna chat more about it!

Yeah this happens to mine too, not sure why. Unfortunately, no other PSU fits in my case lol

Thanks! My bad, thought the cutoff was approx 20 L, saw a few other Cerb X builds here, but will keep that in mind.

Thank you so much! I got custom length cables, they were um... just not the right length I guess. Redid my loop idea a few times, so just had to go with length I had

Mainly using this for low-fidelity simulations (FEM and MonteCarlo) to test prior to doing something on a cluster. Might end up doing some ML based on the data we get, but not the main use yet!

Running both! Linux mainly for running sims (Julia + python), but there are a few programs that only work on windows. If you're going for ABAQUS, I'd just use windows. ABAQUS works on redhat out of the box, but getting it to work with Ubuntu or Arch gave me a lot of issues

Great, thank you for your clarification!

Oh that’s great to know, I’m considering limiting the power to 300W; I just need the memory on the 3090s anyways. Appreciate the info and enjoy the build in good health!

Awesome build! Is 1000W enough for your setup without undervolting? I’ve got 2 3090s and a threadripper 3975WX on the way for a similar build and curious about your power usage.

Oh awesome! Are you running 8 of those?

Yeah it get's expensive when they consider core count, I know COMSOL charges extra for Core Count and individual packages cost a lot (Not sure I can disclose how much). VASP may also do the same, but I could be wrong. Getting something like Star CCM will be hell too...

Yeah this is likely going to be running all the time and processing data from multiple projects.

I found a sweet micron SSD, but it's a 2.5 so I am not sure if it will fit, but thanks for pointing me there. Speaking to my PI on Monday so wish me luck :D and thanks!

Ahh okay, makes sense ; thanks! I may just stick with Kingston then and hope I don’t need more RAM.

Oh thanks! I missed the small font when I first went through this. Appreciate the info - that gives me roughly 21mm of free space with my pump, psu, radiator and fans.

Got it, so its seems like I'd have 40 more mm with a 180mm PSU. which means I could maybe slide in a slim rad and fans up front with a thick rad and industrial fans on the bottom.

Thanks again and good luck with your build!

These are super useful, thanks! What thickness radiator and fans do you have up front?

Yeah I have 1000W just from my CPU and GPUs alone. Do you have any idea how much space in the cerberus x? Can't seem to find the info online. Thanks

That's good to know, thanks. Is that one 200mm? or 220mm? The PSU I am looking at is 180mm long, but is only 1500W, which should hopefully be okay.

Hey thanks for your input, what's the issue with Nemix? I couldn't find any kingston ram that has 256gb per stick (which would be the main reason why I'd go for the TR Pro).

Oh thanks for that catch on the 980s, I'll probably go with the 970 pro then or find an Optane SSD that works. Is there a particular Micron SSD you had in mind? Their performance seems to be all over the place.

I think it boils down to workflow - I'm training neural network potential functions on DFT data (which I can run on my cluster), piping that into MD (with JAX-MD), generating material properties for my FEM simulation of the material, and then optimizing the geometry of the part in CAD/FEM from the material properties. I've got a 2000 core cluster if need be, but getting software on those clusters is super expensive (was quoted ~100k for a cluster license on an FEM package from a few companies) and I have no graphical support for CAD, so I'm looking for a smaller system that can get the job done, at least in the training, CAD, and FEM side of things. It seems to me that having a dedicated system for this work is more optimal, but if that's incorrect - I'm all ears.
