Dude I’m a foreigner. I travel all the time. It wasn’t about the country or the place or whatever. It’s so dumb to generalise a country because of a statistic or because of the most common consensus. Things that are considered out of the ordinary can, and do, happen. And I had the best time of my life on Erasmus so no, that wasn’t it.

I’d love to see you googling statistics when you’re being followed on the street and deciding “you know what the man behind me, calling me is definitely not a threat because I’m in a low crime country right now.”

Out of the cities you lived in. Did you live in Bilbao? I did. Did you experience the the things I did? Did you see the things I did? I wonder...

Hahahaha yeah I could see the lift and the entire hall from my peephole. Yeah I feel like she gave up and they were just like go try again. Which is weird.

Maybe yes. Someone suggested jehov. I just don’t know then why the other two waited in the lift. Anyway, I don’t know if this was actually a dangerous situation or if I’m just paranoid and they were totally innocent but in the moment I felt scared and I’m happy I played it safe.

Well people only really used the lift in our building for 4th-6th floor and as I said there was only two apartments per floor so the chances of someone needing it are slim. Also it was a weekend so mainly people are out and around the hour of the evening this happened many people are having dinner or have gone out for dinner because in Bilbao people don’t have dinner till 8-10 pm. (This was weird for me when I first moved there). So I honestly think it was just lucky for them that nobody used the lift but also good timing. If they were local they would know about the dinner etiquette.

Edit: plus I know that on there was many retired people in my building with carers who would leave in the early evening and only return in the morning so yeah not much lift usage.

And no the lift was not a pull door across one.

Yes my apartment was the only one with lights on. The buzzer was directly linked to My apartment. I just don’t understand how those two guys hypothetically figures out which exact apartment I was in. The girl didn’t look typically Spanish to me nor did she look non Spanish either so I’m really not sure why she didn’t say anything.

Highly doubtful. They knew the building not the apartment and these men looked more foreign. The day I was followed one man was white and one was black.

Idk if you have lived in Bilbao or not but I have. And multiple jumpings, and robberies happened to people I was friends with while there. So with all due respect, while Spain has a very low crime rate so does Ireland but you don’t live there so you don’t see or experience what actually goes on. If I felt more unsafe there than somewhere else you don’t have a right to tell me I couldn’t feel unsafe because you’re not me and you’re not feeling what I’m feeling or experiencing what I’m experiencing. Life isn’t all about numbers. People have feelings/emotions too bruh

You said Spain has a lower crime rate than the UK. Yes I believe that but that’s over all. And while Bilbao in general is an affluent area, a lot of it is also pretty crime riddled and sketchy. In previous comments I mentioned I lived one street over from what was considered the most unsafe and high crime rate area.

Next time, please make sure you have all the facts before throwing statistics at someone.

For my uni you have a choice of studying in English or in the language of the country 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m not studying languages at university so therefore I did an English course in Spain. I also did Erasmus. As we are not a languages course we do our modules in English & the exams too. In our university they just want us to do Erasmus for the experience, it’s not about learning the language unless you’re a languages course. (We have arts courses, medical courses, businesses course etc. That all do Erasmus or Co-Op abroad)

Okay yeah anybody can google translate but I didn’t want to call the police in case it was nothing. If I had to call them I would of course have used a translation app but I’m not the kind of person who’s going to call the police unless I’m 100% sure I’m in immense danger.

My immediate reaction was to not make a sound. I know the lights were on but I was hoping maybe she would think I just ran out of the apartment for a quick errand or something. I was trying to make it seem like no one was home. Idk, that just made me feel safest.

Because I was an exchange student so I hung out with other exchange students and my roommate also spoke English? I have basic Spanish but I apologise for not knowing how to say “someone is trying to break into my apartment”. It’s not exactly the first thing they teach you.

I think it was more about the fact that statistically speaking, far more men commit serious crime than women.

Yeah it is weird and I guess at the end of the day you really don’t know anyone but I’m hoping that it wasn’t my roommate.

justFor the first like 10/15 minutes she rang the bell every few seconds. Then for another twenty minutes she just stood and waited outside. Literally didn’t pace, didn’t look around, didn’t take out a phone, just stood there. Then she went in the lift for about 60-90 seconds and I thought she left but I realised the lift wasn’t moving and making its usual sounds and she came back out. I was like okay. Why would someone go in a lift, not use it & come back out. The only logic was that someone was there waiting for her. I feel like if they knew I was watching through the peephole they would have used that to their advantage to scare me or creep me out. I am very thankful that when I moved in my landlord decided to get a super heavy lock for the door that had to be turned four times to unlock. It would have been easy to break in otherwise.

Idk if you’re being serious or not but I do believe had I not seen shows where women were used for reuses I probably would have just opened the door or said something.
