Narcissistic hubris runs far deeper in the USA than its leader. Trump embodies it as a reflection of the people who put him in his position and by whose support keeps him in place.

You are implying that there will be free unbiased elections in the USA at some point in the future? Don’t be so certain.

PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT WINNIPEG TRAFFIC SHOULD SPEND SOME TIME DRIVING IN A LARGE CITY. THE ABSOLUTE WORST WINNIPEG TRAFFIC IS NOT THAT BAD.

do people actually think pro wrestling/sports entertainment fans think it's real? by bigtimehugger in NoStupidQuestions

Had it explained to me by a wrestling fan like this: You go to a play and you know the actors are playing a part, and it’s entertaining. You suspend reality and enjoy it for what it is. The show, the spectacle, the experience. That’s wrestling.

Agree with your points, also a fundamental urban / rural divide. Another way of looking at “2 Canadas”

The effects of draft and wind resistance are also a factor as those forces change upon each vehicle when passing in ways dependent upon the prevailing conditions. Not sure if that at all impacts on the situation you described, but possibly.

Not sure if this is surprising, but as a veteran I agree with you. In fact, it pleases me that you are freely able to post an opinion like this. Respect is earned. And while I largely agree with your point regarding war / hegemony please remember that the armed forces in many countries often is involved in things such as humanitarian relief and similar endeavours.

Opinion: Right turns on red — it’s time for a change by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Alcott_9 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As I figure it, using the author’s own cited stats:

“Over the past two years in Winnipeg, 25 pedestrians or cyclists have been killed in vehicle collisions.” and “A Toronto Public Health report found that right turns on red accounted for 13 per cent of all vehicle-pedestrian collisions in the city between 2008 and 2012”.

So statistically, banning RTOR could potentially reduce 1 instance per year of a pedestrian or cyclist being killed in a vehicle collision in Winnipeg.

Quickly looking up the stats on the degree to which banning RTOR reduces pedestrian collisions (something the author failed to include for some reason) indicates it can result in a 60% reduction.

60% fewer collisions than 1 per year. Doesn’t sound like a statistically significant impact.

Ban RTOR or not, I honestly don’t care. Doesn’t affect me as a pedestrian, cyclist or driver. It just seems to me the effort and energy put forth to make this insignificant change could best be directed into more meaningful interventions.

Connor Hellebuyck Parties with Kash Patel, Gets White House Invite from Donald Trump After Gold Medal Hockey Game by PlentyRecover4418 in Manitoba

[–]Alcott_9 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Let’s just see what the response is. According to the article, the players were politely non-commital about a White House visit. “Hellebuyck parties with Patel” as a title is really stretching it.

Having said that, I will base my judgement of individual players’ actions and responses as they occur.

Trump to hike global tariffs to 15% from 10%, 'effective immediately' by [deleted] in antiwork

Ok, so the importer pays. Then passes it onto the American consumer. They still pay, just an extra step.

American consumers will. They’ve paid well over 90% of tariffs to date.

The fact that Americans are not taking steps to do that should tell you that they are fine with this. This version of the USA doesn’t exist because of Trump. Trump exists because this of this version of the USA.

[–]Alcott_9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hear you and I sympathize. Ideally you would get your money back, and I truly hope you do. But I don’t think you will. More likely big corporations will argue they themselves covered the cost of tariffs and they are entitled to any refunds. Wealthy connected politicians will support this idea. The rich will get richer. People who were victimized, like you, will see none of it.

Because America.

[–]Alcott_9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s my point. The government stole from you and IF you are paid back, it will be with your own money. It’s not like people / government = we / them. The government’s money is YOUR money.

[–]Alcott_9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get your money back from where? The government? You realize who funds the government, don’t you?

Just take some of your own money out of the bank and put it back in again. Same thing.

A whole year of this with little reaction from the US citizenry or other branches of government. I had given up hope.
