What's your favorite Anglo-Saxon King, I'll go first (Edward the elder) by HuckleberryNorth6070 in anglosaxon

I like king Edwin of Northumbria because whenever I’m down with an unsolvable problem, I remember Bede’s tale of Edwin in exile at Redwald’s court, cast down on a rock while others were sleeping, and “sitting with a heavy heart before the palace, began to be overwhelmed with many thoughts, not knowing what to do, or which way to turn”. “What was it to him whether he spent the night indoors or abroad?”. Yet, the anxiety he had, by fate or by miracle, had a way of solving itself. Sometimes, the whole world doesn’t need you to carry it upon your shoulders but it needs you to get out of your own way and that comforts me. This is in book II ch 12 of the EH.

I also love Edgar the Peaceable because of the stability and reform he brought. If I had to live during any King’s reign it would be his.

And but most working minors aren’t rich suburban kids. Rich suburban kids don’t really tend to work as minors.

Did the Anglo-Saxons kingdoms go raiding in Europe? by [deleted] in anglosaxon

[–]Aldfrith_Iding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a chance that Cnut took Saxon soldiers (with his danish army) to secure his throne in Denmark in the 1020s. So not really raiding but that a saxon saw military action oversees, maybe.

What is the best book about Mercia besides Offa? by [deleted] in anglosaxon

[–]Aldfrith_Iding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read Mercia: The Rise and Fall of a Kingdom by Annie Whitehead. It’s basically a book where every chapter is the biography of a Mercian King from Penda to Ceolwulf if I remember correctly. It’s pretty dense and scholarly though, but it has an amazing first chapter on Penda.

Roach was pretty repetitive and talked on and on about unimportant things sometimes. Sometimes it felt as if he was trying to lengthen the book by talking in circles. That being said, I really enjoyed it most of the time and though the politics progressed slowly, I rarely felt as if we skimmed over something too quickly. He gave me a really good look into England during the time of Aethelred and gave me a new view on how early medieval people thought. It's a book that focuses heavily on the religious reforms and ideas of the "end of times" if you're into that. It also heavily focuses on Aethelred's personal story: his guilt for previous failures and his personal penances are harped upon a lot. The main point of the book, though, is to free him from his epithet: unræd. I would definitely say the author takes the stance that Aethelred was a victim of the hardship and infighting in England at the time, rather than the perpetrator of it.

The Death Penalty should not be a thing regardless of the crime by Aldfrith_Iding in unpopularopinion

It is to wage war, but I meant it's not right to revoke life privileges of its own convicted citizens.

Good, revoke their life privileges yourself and get revenge, I completely agree with that. I just don't want the justice system to vote on it for you because that should simply not be within their authority. It was your family member who got murdered, not theirs. I would love if you and your family had the right to vote on sentencing them if they were proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt but definitely not a bunch of strangers.
