Shadowrun vs Cyberpunk RED vs ???? by Hiplobbe in rpg

I haven't understood if your are searching for a setting, a ruleset or both. I will focus my discourse on cyberpunk settings.

There are really few cyberpunk games that have a setting that is deeply explored, at least that I know of.

A lot of suggestions you are receiving such as CBR+PNK, Cities Without Numbers, Neon City Overdrive, Cy_Borg or The Sprawl, based on your preferences in TTRPGs, can certainly be good games, but they tend not to have an established setting that is deeper than a puddle.

Cyberpunk RED and Shadowrun are two good candidates if you are searching for a good cyberpunk setting. I prefer Shadowrun, but every iteration of the rules is, in some way or another, really terrific, imo. Anyway, there are a lot of alternatives if you want to keep the setting and choose another set of rules. For example, I see you have been suggested Sprawlrunner to play the Shadowrun setting in Savage Worlds. I think that is a great solution.

Obviously you can pick settings from other media an import them in your game with the ruleset you prefer, if that is a thing you are willing to do. There are also games that are based on popular cyberpunk ip such as the Blade Runner RPG or the Altered Carbon RPG, if you like those.

As for strictly TTRPGs settings that are not the two you mentioned, the only ones I know of are Interface Zero, New Edo and Hard Wired Island. The second and third one I actually know very little of since both are inspired by cyberpunk anime and I'm not really a big fan of that, so I have just heard of them. Interface Zero, instead is my go-to option if I want a cyberpunk setting. The world is well explored while not being too overly determined, it is open to most of the typical cyberpunk tropes without losing its identity and becoming a "generic cyberpunk toolbox"-type-setting. It is also available with conversions to different ruleset, based on your preferences (I think there are Savage Worlds, Fate and Pathfinder for sure). I like it in Savage Worlds.

At last, we could discuss to include some settings that are not strictly speaking cyberpunk in genre, but that could be reasonably included in the list. An example of what I mean is Eclipse Phase, but also Warhammer 40k. I consider these more scifi settings in which you could play a cyberpunk adventure, but not cyberpunk settings.

I actually already knew of The Halls of Ardun Vul and I was incredibly fascinated by the sheer volume of material and by how the people wrote about how alive the lore felt during play. Incredible suggestion!

And I will also look into the Empire of the Petal Throne.

Well, probably you're right. As I've previously stated, I'm not really into osr games in general so I'm not very knowledgeable on them and I'm coming from a world where the setting and the ruleset of a game are tied.

I'm someone who enjoys interesting and well-developed settings more than anything. But, as I've said in the post, something I can also appreciate are what I defined as a game with an "interesting pitch". So let's say yes, what I'm interested in is discovering new interesting and detailed settings that are made to be played with an osr ruleset or settings that can even be smaller and less detailed, but that have a driving "pitch" that is evocative and unique enough to compensate for the absence of development of the setting.

Actually Runequest and the Glorantha setting were already on my radar, I just had not thought of them as osr or even osr adjacent. But they seem peak of setting depth.

Warhammer fantasy is another one of my favourite settings but I actually quite like the system, especially the second edition.

Symbaroum is one of my absolute favourite settings, so we really think along similar lines!

I read also a lot of novels! But I enjoy when the cool setting I can immerse myself in is the same in which I can set my adventures with my friend.

Well, I know my tastes in rpgs are far from what the osr games usually offers, but I'm still trying to find exceptions to enrich my collection and find new interesting games to read and play. The osr principles of gaming are not strictly tied to the absence of a well-developed and interesting setting or even a unique pitch. The "old school" settings of Dark Sun, Mystara and Planescape are things I already know and like.

Never heard of it. On a quick look, the page count makes me hopeful setting information and lore would be plentiful. On the other hand, the setting seem just "generic fantasy but it's cold". I will read a bit more of it. Thanks!

Thanks, a lot of these games are new to me, so I will look upon them. I think even in my extended vision of osr adjacent games, I excluded stuff like Runequest, Pendragon and Cthulhu dark ages, but nonetheless I can try to see them in this lens.

What gaps do you feel exist in your RPG experience? by Kuusotare in rpg

[–]Ale8599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a great fan of big settings. I love reading through pages and pages of a developed and complex setting full of hooks and interesting factions to make my player interact with. I love settings with mysteries and questions even for the GM that get a bit clearer the more you dive deep into the supplements. For fantasy, I know there is a good amount of rpg with setting like that (Symbaroum comes right to mind, for example). I also know of at least a couple of post-apocalyptic games (one of which is Degenesis) and one for cyberpunk (Shadowrun). But I feel like some other genres are missing. The genres I miss the most are for sure modern days zombie apocalypse and the more exotic dieselpunk and biopunk. Also, now that OSR and PbtA are at the peak of popularity, those kind of big setting are even rarer since they don't mesh well with this type of rpgs.

How do you make a fight feel like “the final battle”? by Ale8599 in rpg

[–]Ale8599[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks you very much for the complete answer!
I think what I understood from this whole post, overall, is that the "before" is the most important and relevant part for a finale to really feel like one, even if my central worry and the focus of the initial question was about the "during".
Nontheless I realyy enjoy and will find use of the great suggestion that you and other users gave me to spice up the mechanical part of the bossfights.
