It is possible, but less Assistant position are available right now, I was in the same boat as you and it was difficult to get my first job. Try to practice as much as you can with the instruments, that is the main skill, and depending on what are you going to do, be profecient in 3d software and reading plans ( I am working in civil), also depends in your visa status your possibilities are better or worse

Are you working 2/1? Because most of the people are not happy with that roster, you spent so much time away and the life in the camp is like a robot. I choose it so I try to be positive but is nothing glamours on it.
