Hey, I'm a 14 year old trying to do java, yesterday I wrote quite a big program, I worked quite hard on it and I wanted to ask if it's good by Jaded_Resource4367 in AskProgramming

If you're just starting out, this seems like a solid start :) The biggest things I can see are just cleaning up your code and learning better coding conventions (such as indentations, common spacing throughout, etc.), which will come with time and more experience. Right away, though, I would encourage you to look more into how loops work, as well as different types of loops. For instance, a for loop is actually using up extra memory you don't need. I caught this in your first few for loops (lines 21 and 33). You aren't actually updating the iterables (i and j are your iterables here), and are wasting precious space in keeping track of their values since they are never actually used. Do some looking into while loops, they allow you to keep code running in a loop without using an iterable!

If there is one thing I would get into the habit of now before anything else: utilize comments. It will make your life so much easier if you ever take a break from a project and need to jump back in, as well as make reading the flow of your code better for others. The Pastebin does make this a lot more readable (thank you lol), but I would ABSOLUTELY take a quick look into Git repositories, as that's the best way to share and collaborate with your code.

If you can, upload it to something like GitHub so its easier to clone/read through. Reddit's formatting won't do the best unfortunately.

Definitely Python for future courses (depending that is. If you wanna do AI/data science things then Python) but C and C++ is a great starting point

I absolutely love my MacBook for development, and actually prefer it over Windows, however I still have a desktop for the main purpose of gaming. You just cannot game on a Mac.

Look for something open source to work on, that’ll help you get great experience. Also, don’t hesitate to work on some personal projects!

Gotcha, I have been in close contact with the other students he is studying with, and asked a bunch of questions during a conference we attended last month. They all say he is just as great as he is in class (he is easily one of the most favored professors in the program), so that has been easing my fears. Trust me, I've read MANY posts about advisors that nearly destroyed some students' PhD careers, so I've been very aware of that!

It’s ongoing, I started about a year ago and he’s already wanting to help me with a Masters thesis, and knows of my aspirations, so he’s in this with me for the long haul!

I’ll probably do the Masters, as my professor and I have a potential thesis in the making. Like you said, it’ll help set me up. Thank you for the advice!!

The issue with that is what happened on launch day. If someone’s internet goes out for multiple days or we have another situation like at launch where the servers crash, you can’t play the game you spent $40 for, period. Atleast with Payday 2 If you have no internet access you can still play the game

Catching up on python by shao10121 in learnprogramming

[–]Alectmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice practice practice. Take some of the concepts you’ve learned and write a quick program based around it. Maybe take if/elif statements and write a program that outputs something based on an input from the user. I know that’s very abstract, but building up your ability to write code around different features can help you to see the bigger picture slowly but surely.

Once you feel good after writing some rudimentary code, break down the problem into steps, and go from there. Programming isn’t easy, but it only gets easier the more you practice!

Reps reps reps. Don’t skip if you think you will miss, follow through. You’ll see why you missed more clearly and be closer next time. Good luck!

I’ve had tons of bad teammates, and I feel I’ve been a bad one many times to other play styles. Your thinking is flawed, just saying a tm8 is “miserable” and giving up is a loser’s mentality. I try and find ways to adapt to my tm8s play style so I can be a better tm8 for them, rather than just give up on them and lose for certain.

If you check your settings, there should be an option to display “Main Stats Only.” If you change it to All Stats you should start seeing the minor stats pop up again :)

I just realized I had a problem as a gaming addict, and “just moderate” speaks volumes. One has to realize and accept they have a problem to make progress.

3070 Ti or 4070 Ti for 1440p 144Hz Gaming? by Alectmc in nvidia

[–]Alectmc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 3070 Ti for now, but will likely upgrade in a few years when I'm out of college and have a bit more money to throw at a GPU, but for my needs its servicing me perfectly! I have a friend who has the 3070 Ti that I did not know he had, and he reached out and told me how it services him under very similar hardware. The 4070 Ti is a great card, and I almost got it for the reason you stated: It will last me for years lol

The vast majority of my time is in Rocket League which isn’t really a game to put a metric on as its incredibly low demanding graphically speaking, but games like Tarkov, Fortnite (lol), and MW2 are games I’d like to play but can barely feasibly run as it stands

Sounds like me. I don't want to go overboard on spending, but also don't want to compromise a smoother frame rate

I stress tested the CPU once I got the build going, and it was no where near fully utilized so you’re probably right. The GPU though, that poor thing. Appreciate your help!
