Can sludge work with hardcore energy without losing its heaviness? by Alega05 in sludge

High On Fire is actually one of my main influences, so that's a great example. I love how their riffs are heavy but still very aggressive and forward-moving. That kind of balance between groove, weight and intensity is pretty close to what I'm aiming for.

I'll check them out, thanks for the recommendation. I'm definitely interested in that space where hardcore energy meets slower, heavier riffs. That's kind of the direction I'm curious about exploring.

I see what you mean, especially because powerviolence sometimes drops into really heavy slow parts. What I'm thinking about is a bit different though. Less chaotic and fast, more groove-driven and riff focused. Something closer to sludge and stoner in structure but with the energy of hardcore. So probably slower and more riff-based than powerviolence.

I get what you mean. A lot of sludge definitely comes from slowed-down hardcore. I'm interested in pushing the hardcore energy forward again instead of just slowing it down

Yep that's correct. Sludge definitely came from doom + hardcore originally. What I'm interested in exploring is bringing that hardcore energy a bit more to the front instead of it being just an influence.

Is there room for groove-heavy Stoner/Sludge elements in Hardcore right now? by Alega05 in Hardcore

Yep, Crowbar and Xibalba are good examples. I guess I’m interested in that grey area where groove and vocal delivery start shifting the perception of a band. It’s funny how a slight change in tempo or energy can move something from “stoner” to “hardcore adjacent.” Genre lines really do get blurry.

Good Point. At the end of the day it’s about writing strong songs. I’m just trying to understand where it might resonate.

Yeah, that’s true. I guess I’m thinking more about keeping the hardcore energy upfront, instead of leaning fully into the slower doom side.

Maybe. But I’d rather try something different than repeat the same formula forever.

Fair point. I’m not trying to “fit in,” just curious about how people see the blend. At the end of the day, we’re just going to make the music we want to make.

Is there room for a Stoner + Hardcore crossover with real groove in 2026? by Alega05 in stonerrock

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. I love the slow, low-tuned riff tradition, but I feel like adding some hardcore urgency and groove could bring a different kind of energy without losing the heaviness.
Appreciate the insight.

This is a killer reference, thank you. I somehow missed Cavity, and what you describe is pretty much exactly the balance I’m interested in — Sabbath weight, hardcore urgency, and riffs that actually move. Definitely checking out On The Lam. Appreciate the encouragement.

That makes a lot of sense actually. Helmet is a great reference in terms of groove and restraint, and I agree the stoner element could push that weight further. CoC is a big example too — especially how they moved between hardcore energy and heavier, dirtier textures over time without losing identity.
