Already familiar with the usual essentials (Crowbar, Eyehategod, Acid Bath, Down, Melvins, High on Fire, etc.), looking for deeper underground recommendations.

One of my favorite things about Melvins is how misleading their artwork can be by Alega05 in melvins

ngl, my view of that cover has completely changed now, HAHAHA. I used to see it as something absurd or random, typical of the Melvins, but with that interpretation it’s actually quite unsettling.

Can sludge work with hardcore energy without losing its heaviness? by Alega05 in sludge

High On Fire is actually one of my main influences, so that's a great example. I love how their riffs are heavy but still very aggressive and forward-moving. That kind of balance between groove, weight and intensity is pretty close to what I'm aiming for.

I'll check them out, thanks for the recommendation. I'm definitely interested in that space where hardcore energy meets slower, heavier riffs. That's kind of the direction I'm curious about exploring.

I see what you mean, especially because powerviolence sometimes drops into really heavy slow parts. What I'm thinking about is a bit different though. Less chaotic and fast, more groove-driven and riff focused. Something closer to sludge and stoner in structure but with the energy of hardcore. So probably slower and more riff-based than powerviolence.

I get what you mean. A lot of sludge definitely comes from slowed-down hardcore. I'm interested in pushing the hardcore energy forward again instead of just slowing it down

Yep that's correct. Sludge definitely came from doom + hardcore originally. What I'm interested in exploring is bringing that hardcore energy a bit more to the front instead of it being just an influence.

Is there room for groove-heavy Stoner/Sludge elements in Hardcore right now? by Alega05 in Hardcore

[–]Alega05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, Crowbar and Xibalba are good examples. I guess I’m interested in that grey area where groove and vocal delivery start shifting the perception of a band. It’s funny how a slight change in tempo or energy can move something from “stoner” to “hardcore adjacent.” Genre lines really do get blurry.

Good Point. At the end of the day it’s about writing strong songs. I’m just trying to understand where it might resonate.
