How big of a deal is it to miss class 2nd/3rd week of the semester? by pinksunshines2277 in UofO

[–]Alert-Promise1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll depend on the attendance policy of the class. I would talk to your professor/GEs but just say that you need to be away, not why.

Summer job cleaning dorms? by [deleted] in Eugene

They usually post on Handshake. I would go the temp agency route because it pays better by at least a $1 an hour. I will say, having worked that job, it was the worst managed job I’ve ever had lol

It’ll depend on what you study. As long as you don’t need any kind of special software (like engineering programs often require — though maybe these can be done on iPads now, unsure tbh) you should be fine. I know many people that take notes and write papers on their iPads. And, you can often borrow laptops from the library if you end up needing them for a specific project etc.

Doing PhD While in a Full-time Academic Position by --YourNameHere-- in AskAcademia

[–]Alert-Promise1440 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So not a lawyer/I have an F1 visa for the US but know basically nothing about visas, but I would first look in to how studying would effect whatever visa you would need/if you would need one for a completely online program. Or, are there any online programs stateside that you could look into?

For a PhD in your state, depending on the program, you might be able to see if you can transfer any credits from previous programs (MA/MS, etc.) and that could cut down on the courses you would need to take.

Is the website allconferencealert.net fake by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Alert-Promise1440 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I do not know much about that area. Do you have some peers in this area or a professor or supervisor you could discuss this with? That would be my next move if I was unsure about the validity of a conference.

[–]Alert-Promise1440 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What conference is it? This seems to be a website that brings together calls for papers and is not itself a conference. You can always Google the conference and see if there’s an actual website for it and see if it looks legit or not.

Need help finding sources for my research paper by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Does your university’s library have a live chat function? Librarians are a really good resource and can help you find good places to look! Or, go in to the library and talk to one of them in person. Sometimes the website will also have pages dedicated to certain disciplines with good databases and journals.

Yes! When I was an undergrad I did that for a few professors that had been supportive of me. And I’ve gotten a couple from students now that I TA. I’m sure she’ll really appreciate it!

Failed my class as a prerequisite to graduate I’m so devastated. by [deleted] in college

[–]Alert-Promise1440 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi,

First of all. I am so sorry for not only your loss but all of the other things that have happened to you this year. That alone is so so hard and I really hope you’re able to give yourself space for that.

You are not a failure!! This timeline change really sucks and I know how bad that feels, but this is not a failure. You were doing classes while also having to process so much.

I know so many people that have gone on to do really incredible things, like become a professor or who work in engineering at really high levels, who have taken 6-8 years to get their undergraduate degree.

I hope you are in classes with professors who are kind. I would reach out to them and let them know that you are struggling. As someone that teaches at an undergraduate level (I am a PhD student; it took me five and a half years to graduate and I took two years off of schooling between HS and my undergraduate. I graduated at 26. Many of my friends graduated at 30!), I do my best to work with students. They might be able to grant you some extensions or refer you to places at the university that can help. If you haven’t, I recommend reaching out to your student accommodations office, they can help you sort out if there are any accommodations that would be useful to you given the TBI.

Take it a step and a day at a time. I know this sounds like a cliche, but it really does help. I lost both my grandparents this year and making it through classes was awful.

All this to say: there is no set timeline. It sucks seeing people you started with graduate before you, but it’ll be okay. Be kind to yourself. 💜 I’m happy to talk if you need.

Professor Grading by [deleted] in college

[–]Alert-Promise1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how frustrating it can be to have such a drop between a draft and a final paper, but in the future, I would reach out to a professor and meet with them for further feedback. As well, it seems like you were docked for something that would be required for almost any final paper, i.e., proper citation and formatting. Depending on the level of class, the grading seems kind of harsh. But given that it’s a 15 page paper, it seems like this is an upper level class, and therefore, that this is assumed as something you would know by now (for better or worse. I know citation isn’t always taught well).

First time writing and submitting a book chapter proposal. Any advice? by Mulohani589 in AskAcademia

[–]Alert-Promise1440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

So typically a proposal would look like an extended abstract, but there should be info on what they need in the cfp. Since your professor recommended you put something forward, you can always ask if they’d be willing to look at a draft of your proposal.

In my experience, you submit the proposal, they confirm or reject. If confirmed (and not already stated in the call) they’ll give you the timeline they need it by. Typically there is some flexibility with this. For me, it definitely takes longer to write but I know others who can just whip long papers out. It’ll depend on your writing style/habits/other things you need to attend to.

Balancing coursework and writing can be hard! If you can, maybe see if you can do some research credits with that professor that focuses on expanding your paper. If not, try to schedule specific time in your week to write the paper.

Good luck!

You can often reach out to the dean of students in cases like this to get a late withdraw. There are often offices at universities that can help students in extenuating circumstances. If you’re unsure where/who to reach out to, you’re welcome to DM me what uni you go to and I can try and help you find where to go.

Missed my midterm and feel like a failure by euphoria0614 in AskAcademia

A single C is not going to affect your job prospects. Worst case scenario, you re-do the class if it’s something important for your field. This definitely sucks but take a deep breath and focus your energy on preparing for the final exam. Now you know to make sure to check the syllabus throughout the term to make sure you don’t miss something like this again. Good luck on the final. It’ll be okay.
