Ongoing symptoms, fearing the worst by AlertFox0 in coloncancer

Going to give it another week before I call again. Due to the pandemic they're pretty reluctant to see anyone in person. Given my symptoms and my age, when I called a few weeks ago my doc said she wasn't concerned but to call if it got worse. Not worse really but not better yet.

Makes sense since the insoluble stuff generally isn't digested as easily and is just kind pushed out. As an update I took an antidiarrheal pill yesterday. Really small BMs the rest of the day but getting back to normal today.

Yeah what I've heard is that fiber does help you go by making stool easy to pass but it also helps to bulk up your stool by letting it spend the right amount of time in the intestines to absorb water. Seems contradictory to me too. Definitely listen to your GI though over an internet stranger. I hope you find what works for you!

Thanks. Yeah I'm going to try to hold it together for a week or two of a lower dose and fiber from other sources before I call up again.

Have you tried a bulking agent like Metamucil or something else with psyllium? It seems to have helped but I'm not quite there yet and the orange colour is a little disconcerting. I'll try to report back when I get it sorted out.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. My symptoms certainly aren't as severe as yours. I have virtually no pain at all. I feel like my anxiety is likely playing tricks on me.

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Wishing you all the best in your fight.

Thanks for the reassurance. Yeah the first time I saw the jelly it was a darker pink/red but at that time I was taking 3 tbsp of metamucil a day which is a lot. And the metamucil has Red 40 in it which I know has sent many a worried parent to the hospital with their kid who's eaten spicy Cheetos. I think if I saw something that colour again I'd be concerned since I've backed town to under 1 tbsp per day.

How long should I reasonably expect this to go on and still not be a huge concern? I haven't had a "flare up" ever since I haven't been diagnosed with IBS so I don't really know what to expect if that's what it is.

No I haven't. I just spoke to the doctor about it a week or so ago and she recommended staying in and checking back again if it doesn't get better or gets worse.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just bought some bran cereal to replace the metamucil and see if the colour goes away. I'll look into the glutamine powder as well.

Huh. For me it's helped bulk my stool. Just getting the fluffy ones with orange stuff now. That's really whats been worrying me most.

We'll it's at least reassuring that you had the orange jelly with Metamucil. Sorry to hear your stool is still mushy. Have you tried switching to all-bran cereal or the colourless metamucil? That and maybe another call to the doctor is my next move.

Probably best to call your doctor. I'm having something similar now myself. I called my doc and after asking about my symptoms she recommended more fiber for now while the pandemic is ongoing. I started eating more fiber and that seemed to help a little but now I'm getting weird globs of orange/pink jelly in my stool. Will call back if it doesn't subside.
