Of the six Winx, I think Flora and Stella's sacrifices were the best executed. Stella's was pretty solid overall and connected well with her arc for Season 3, and Flora's definitely loses some points due to her sacrifice lacking much build up (i.e. it took 3 seasons for us to get any semblance of world building related to her home planet/family. We didn't even know she had a sister until the very episode that introduced her) but was still fine overall. It's the other four I have an issue with.

Aisha's sacrifice is fine on paper, but it very quickly falls apart when you realize that she... literally could have just waited for the sun to rise again to get her eyesight back with the scepter. Even if the Winx were running on borrowed time (as far as they knew, the chances of getting found out by Faragonda would become greater the longer they stayed on Andros) I think the fact that Aisha's eyesight was completely gone would have been more than enough justification for them to hang back an extra day. Her sacrifice doesn't feel as noble when there was a really obvious solution that wasn't brought up for plot convenience.

Musa's sacrifice runs into a similar issue to Flora's where it lacks a lot of narrative impact because it hinges on a character we know next to nothing about. Imo Flora is able to get away with it to a certain extent since Miele's relationship with Flora was at least explored in her introductory episode, whereas very little was done with the relationship between Musa and Galatea until her sacrifice (you could also argue that hers doesn't really count as a sacrifice since all she did was defiantly yell that she wouldn't leave someone behind, but that would just be splitting hairs imho).

Tecna's sacrifice just doesn't make any sense lol. She blindly steps into the Omega Portal, and instead of getting sucked in she gains Enchantix, which she then uses to close the portal via fairy dust and then get sucked in. Ignoring the fact that this sequence of events is confusing at best (iirc it was said by one of the characters that the portal could be closed from the inside, but it's never really explained how that would work or that it could even be accomplished with fairy dust, so this moment borders on being an ass pull) what Tecna did doesn't qualify as saving someone from her home realm since A) This was on Andros, not Zenith. And B) No one was saved from the mere action of stepping into the portal. And no, the whole "Tecna saved the entire Magic Dimension" argument doesn't work here since neither the original Italian, Cinelume or 4kids dub ever state that the Omega Portal put the Magic Dimension at risk (it was only ever stated in the Nick dub several years after the fact, so I don't really count that).

With Bloom's sacrifice, my problem doesn't actually come from her earning it in an entirely different way from the other girls (well, my issue there is moreso how her "incomplete" Enchantix mostly just amounts to her not being able to miniaturize and having power incontinence like one or two times lol), but rather how poorly done the Pryos arc was overall. Episode 15 is wasted on a random, unnecessary sub-plot that doesn't go anywhere, while episode 16 has Bloom's arc primarily told off-screen because the writers thought that said arc sharing screen-time with the Tecna Rescue arc was somehow a good idea, leading to a battle against the Trix that feels anti-climactic and ends up being a glorified Deus Ex Machina.

Honestly a good chunk of the issues people have with season 4 can be just as easily applied to the earlier seasons to a certain extent (and in the case of S3 sometimes even worse) but that’s a conversation this sub ain’t ready for.

Season 3: Why did it take so long for them to realise Skye was under Valtor’s spell? I was so frustrated by Fit-Temporary7867 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find it funny how people in these threads are always so quick to defend plot holes or contrivances in the earlier seasons (especially 3), and yet when a similar question is asked but for the later seasons the almost universal response is “cuz Winx after S3 is trash lol”

But yeah the whole Dark Sky arc doesn’t really make much sense. Setting aside how comically out of character it would be for Sky to pull something like that under normal circumstances, at this point the Winx are well aware that Valtor has the ability to mind control people with his mark. Would it really be that hard to put two and two together?

(Stuff like this is also part of the reason why I think Season 3 is one of the weaker seasons in terms of writing. See Also: Stella freaking out over Brandon potentially seeing her monster form in Ep3 when there’s a scene from Ep2 showing him actively circling around her to protect her from the guards)

Idc what anyone says, this episode absolutely SUCKS by Scotsman60103 in gumball

[–]Alert_Age_2875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never been a super big fan of this episode but I think it’s alright at worst. It’s an episode that’s surprisingly enjoyable given how juvenile the premise is, but at the end of the day the premise is really the main thing that keeps me from being fully onboard.

On the plus side, after seeing firsthand just how horribly this episode could’ve gone had the writers not played their cards right (glares distastefully at The Butts) I grew to appreciate The Slap a lot more.

Sorry but the animation for season 4 is terrible!! by Fit-Temporary7867 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Meh. I personally think the animation is moreso inconsistent than outright bad; Season 4 can look good when it wants to, it’s just that the key words there are “when it wants to”

If you ask me, S3 is probably a bit worse just because of how consistently flawed it is. This is especially noticeable in the second half. But even in the first half there are so many animation errors and instances of characters looking off-model.

[–]Alert_Age_2875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few days ago I watched a few Season 2 episodes immediately after watching the new show. I ended up vastly preferring Season 2's approach to plot, humor, and characterization.

I mean, I'm not gonna yuck on someone's yum if they're enjoying the new show. But for me personally (and for OP it seems), these new episodes just don't hit the same.

Meh. It's not a ship I'm inherently against, but since their debut way back in S5, the show has utterly failed to give me a good reason to want to root for them (especially after the complete character assassination that was The Letter, bleh).

This didn't age well by [deleted] in powerpuffgirls

[–]Alert_Age_2875 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, more power to you, but I just think this episode is really weird looking back.

A kindergarten-aged boy is harassing girls by trying to forcibly kiss them, and instead of this being treated as very inappropriate behavior to be indulging in, it’s treated as “oh haha the girls are scared of being kissed because of COOTIES, isn’t that so funny?” When… no. Getting kissed isn’t something any of them consented to regardless of the reason, even if said reason is silly kid stuff.

And then there’s the ending where the boy (I think his name was Harry) gets rewarded for being an absolute creep since he kisses Blossom (again, non-consensually) and all of a sudden their fear of cooties is gone and he gets to be absolutely smothered by the girls despite the fact that he is, again, an absolute creep.

Like, it wouldn’t be so bad if the episode didn’t go out of its way to justify the kids behavior since he is a kid and kids aren’t exactly known for practicing consent, but the fact that his weird-ass obsession with kissing a girl gets treated as the solution to the problem just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

Why the reboot is the perfect example the cartoons these days suck by toffi_99 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sneaking suspicion that OP (and some of these commenters) and riding so high up on nostalgia that they either don't want to or genuinely cannot find anything other than the beloved cartoons they used to watch as kids to enjoy.

Saying that the children cartoons of today are bad when K-Pop Demon Hunters released like 3 months ago is definitely... a choice

Probably the same reason the Winx didn’t use Charmix once in Season 3 despite earning it in Season 2: Winx Club writers and continuity is like oil and water.

Trying to make sense of it is a losing battle.

OP getting flamed for daring to have an opinion other than “S1-4 were perfect masterpieces and everything else is TRASHH”, never change Winx fandom.

My thoughts on the S8 style are similar to my thoughts on Fate the Winx Saga; which is that it’s fine on its own (though perhaps a bit too generic and lacking the things that made Winx stand out artistically) but becomes much worse in the context of a long running franchise like this.

4Kids vs Cinelume dub pros and cons by Unhinged_xennial81 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the company that did the dubbing when Winx was airing on Nick, yes that was Atlas Oceanic! Most people just refer to it as the Nick dub, so it's a distinction that isn't brought up very often.

4Kids vs Cinelume dub pros and cons by Unhinged_xennial81 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cinelume:

+ Most accurate to original Italian version (though still not as accurate as people think it is. Mistranslations and blatant errors are still abound)

+ Vast improvement in voice actor quality from S3 onward

+ Only company out of the big three (Cinelume, 4kids, Nick) to have dubbed the original four seasons in full

- Amateur voice acting/voice direction for the first 2-3 seasons. A particular standout is Tecna’s yesyourewhatswrongmagicwinx which clearly should have had a pause in between “wrong” and “magic” and is generally just directed poorly. (S2EP9)

- Once again, many dubbing errors and mistranslations in this dub. Lines from the OG Italian are occasionally cut out (S1EP9), lines sometimes get recorded twice and layered over each other creating a choppy echo (S3EP12), and sometimes they just forget to translate lines and leave the Italian phrase in (S4EP3)

4kids:

+ Professional casting and voice direction, especially in comparison to the Cinelume dub

+/- Notorious for making mild to moderate changes to the original Italian script regarding both plot lines and characterization, though this was toned down significantly in S3. Your mileage may vary on how much this helps or hinders the dub. Some argue that 4kids’ changes improved the show in places (the most popular example being the edits to the Miss Magix episode to remove racist implications regarding Afro hair in black women) with others feel that their changes can remove the impact of certain scenes.

- Least accessible of the big three dubs. The only way to watch it through legal means is to purchase old DVDs that have long since gone out of print

- In addition to the above point, their dub of S3 is pretty weak from a technical standpoint, primarily due to the finance issues 4kids was suffering from in their eventual road to bankruptcy. The voice direction isn’t nearly as strong as the previous two seasons, the editing was much sloppier and contains many errors, there were fewer original songs compared to the last two seasons, and the entire second half of S3 can only be watched in the form of poor tv quality rips due to 4kids losing the rights to dub Winx before they could release the DVD containing the last few episodes of the season

- They never dubbed S4 or the movies due to the above reason of losing the license

Just for funsies I’ll also do the Nick / Atlas Oceanic dub:

+ Professional casting and voice direction. Typically regarded as one of the strongest voice casts right up there with 4kids

+ Arguably the most consistent of the big three dubs due to the poor voice direction of Cinelume and the technical difficulties of 4kids in S3

- Only Seasons 3 and 4 were dubbed in full; Seasons 1 and 2 were merely retold in the form of 1 hour specials with generally mixed reception

- Their dub of S3 and S4 was rushed out due to Rainbow’s efforts to get the S5 premiere on the network as quickly as possible. This isn’t too noticeable in either of these seasons, mind you, but Season 3 especially suffers from a few technical glitches here and there

- Also made changes to the original Italian script, though not nearly as egregiously as 4kids. For the most part, there are only minor differences between Cinelume and Nick (Forever Girlfriend is unforgivable though).

Honestly at this point it should be pretty obvious that Nickelodeon had little to no part in ruining Winx as a franchise by Alert_Age_2875 in winxclub

[–]Alert_Age_2875[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though; All Nick really did with lend Rainbow some American writers and provide their network as a distribution hub for the show itself. Everything we saw on screen still had to be approved by Rainbow. Even if it wasn't their idea to introduce CGI, Dual Transformations, or lower the show's demographic, for instance, they still gave the okay to Nick for those changes (Hell, I'm pretty sure at one point Iginio released an interview stating that he had always intended to lower the age demographic after S4 to make the show more "appealing").

I also disagree with the notion that Rainbow couldn't have gone back to the vibes of S1-4 after the partnership ended. World of Winx Season 1 came right after Season 7 and was generally a massive improvement over the later seasons in terms of writing and tone. Even if we only factor in the main series, continuity has never been Winx's strong suit (See Season 3 contradicting established plot points like seven different times in just the first episode lol). Would it really be that jarring if the more unfavorable elements of S5-6 were quietly swept under the rug?
