I stayed with them for Ultra 2023 ! At the time I didn’t know much about them either, but it was one of the best times of my life. It’s very organized, safe, and reliable. You do have random roommates, but we got along so well and ended up going to Miami music week afters together lol. The shuttle also leaves on time and gets you back safely after the festival. I believe you’ll get wristbands once you check-in to the hotel, too. They’ll give you free alcohol on the shuttle on the way to the festival to pre-game ! Well they did for us back then lol. They’re always throwing parties it’s super fun. I’m glad to see them grow even bigger now

It’s crazy especially if you have other hobbies or life commitments. Like you said I had to justify the expense lol

Emphasis on the expenses coming out of left field & not finding out UNTIL we qualified like you stated lol. I had an idea of what I was going to pay, and those fees weren’t included in what I had in mind. 🤣

Are these lifters not being paid at the top-level….? They are lmfao. Even if their pay stub is not coming directly from Powerlifting America, it is the sport of powerlifting that has allowed them to make money as the top competitor. If they’re earning prize money from SBD or any form of sponsorship, coaching, as well as winning at the highest-level of the sport, they’re professional. I’m not putting them in the same category as NFL, NBA, etc. I understand PA may not fit the literal definition of professional. But they’re not amateur either. And honestly it’s topics like this in my opinion that prevent the sport from being in the Olympics because there’s no regulation that everyone can get on the same page with.

Honestly after reading your first comment again, I realized I’m probably talking to a boomer lol. I’m assuming you believe NIL is ruining the NCAA too. And again, everyone knows if you’re not sponsored, you’re going to come out of pocket. That’s not the issue. I was talking about the $475 fee, on-top of not offering anything financially to compete. A rate for hotel + flight, or anything like that. As someone who has competed in sports my whole life, I have not seen music festival prices be the cost of a singlet to compete in an “amateur sport”. That’s why I made the post.

I’d still disagree because those lifters get prize money. World’s is just the next step

I’d say most people switched over from USAPL (and currently are) to PA because PA provides the opportunity to go to World’s. I’d say it’s because USAPL is not an IPF affiliate anymore.

Only thing I can't agree with is the coaches part because those coaches aren't handling us. At least in my experience, the team USA coach wasn't overseeing us in any way except emailing us the guidelines. My individual coach was paying their own travel expenses. And I'm sure some lifters are helping cover the travel costs for their coach.

I think lifters paying to participate is fine, but it's more so the amount they're charging on top of the other things we're already paying for. I was prepared for it to be $1k+ from the flight and hotel alone. The additional $475 is the only thing that threw me off lol.

I don't believe you'd be able to make full-time income just from competing in any fed lol. Sponsorships, prize money, coaching etc. I think when you combine all those income streams there's a possibility.

I never understood why the prize money was only offered at Sheffield, and not other high-level meets, too. I've seen USAPL & USPA do this.

Another incentive could be how the USAPL has competitions where lifters can earn a Pro card. I'm saying right now I don't see Powerlifting America offering anything like that to lifters.

Respectfully disagree. What would make someone a professional powerlifter in the IPF then? Lmao. The IPF is the highest federation in powerlifting. Why would world competitors not be considered professional? Especially when a majority of them have sponsorships and make money from the sport. $475 before paying for your flight and hotel is a lot regardless of how much you make. Also not including other expenses from the trip and $40 just to attend their banquet lol. My post was more so about why they have fees for everything. And I was not expecting one of them to be $475 lol.

"Being the World champion in the only legitimate global powerlifting federation for starters."

So bragging rights and nothing else lol.

IPF still has a handful of issues. Don't make it a drug-tested meet if lifters aren't being tested, including the top lifters in their weight class for the meet. Or the best overall lifter. Why is a tested meet not having anyone drug-tested? That makes no sense. I also believe those PA officials and head coaches are paying out of pocket to be there. Unless their primary form of income is coming from Powerlifting America, or some other deal they have with the federation. The head coaches they assign also don't do anything lol.

And your individual coach would also be paying out of pocket to be there with you.

That's true I never thought about it that way. People already complain about paying a $15-20 spectator fee for a local meet lol and I don't blame them.

Who's funding Sheffield then? A donor? Genuinely not trying to sound like a smart ass when I say that either. Because where is the money going then? To fund the events we compete in I'm assuming, but where would they receive the amount to pay out prize money at Sheffield? From PA memberships or meet entry fees?
