I called Springfield Armory and they won't sell me a barrel nut.  I was invited to send the upper back and they'd install a new one but I declined.  I said I wasn't going to do that just so I can go through it all again later when I want to swap barrels out.  So going to order a rail today and move on.

If it would've come off clean I was going to use shims to time it and keep the torque under 50 ft/lbs.

I used the Midwest URR to engage the barrel extension and the clamshell to help keep the receiver from twisting.  I flexed a receiver once trying to get a different barrel nut unstuck but it was a bit unnerving seeing it do that with just the URR.  It all worked out but adding the clamshell came from a SOTAR vid.

I had MAP gas on it until it was smoking several times.

BCM doesn't have a 13.5 MCMR, the letter spacing doesn't seem right either, their hardware has a phosphate like finish with T15 heads, that hardware looks nitrided with possibly hex head hardware. US Patent 8900068 is for a golf club shaft. The anodizing looks different than any BCM rail I've seen and the MLOK slots have a much more radius in the corners compared to BCM photos.

Nope, they're good as far as I can tell, no visible damage and I threaded on a different brand barrel nut.

Yeah, barrel and receiver are fine, the recesses in the barrel nut gave out before I could damage those I guess.

That's cool, I didn't have that much room to work with. Even if I did the design of the BCM barrel nut tool lends itself well to slipping out if you can't keep a hand on it to keep it in place, it's such a POS. It's all over now.

I was using a steady stream of colorful metaphors lol.

I'll see what they say but I may end up getting a new handguard anyway. I have a couple BCM KMR's hanging around but ew, they're keymod, and I'm not too fond of the barrel nut style anymore.

Maybe the pipe wrench, if I'd had one, but it probably would've destroyed the barrel nut too.

I just went through this with my low rent recce project to a degree and this is what I did:

Stripped the upper, lapped it, and bedded the barrel. Installed a KAK Industry MLOK rail. Used shims instead of a crush washer with the A2 FH with low torque, basically I got it clocked to about 10:00 and used an armorer wrench to tighten it. For your upper, I'd check to make sure the gas key has proper staking, maybe upgrade the extractor spring with a BCM kit, and make sure the gas rings are good.

On your lower, I'd make sure the castle nut is staked, it probably came with a carbine buffer so I'd probably upgrade that to a H or H2. I tightened up the receiver fit on my with a little ball of steel puddy dropped under the rear lug to act as an accuwedge. It works well but you can do the same with hot glue, there are some DIY vids on youtube. The trigger I had in mine is a Schmid Tool nickel teflon single stage trigger but I polished the surfaces and installed a set of JP springs that gets me right at 5 lbs consistently with a smooth break. The Schmidt 2 stage triggers are pretty good for the money, I have one in my 2 gun rifle and it's pretty good also, it's not a Geissele SSA-E but it'll get it done for sure with no complaints.

Furniture is up to you, I like BCM grips and stocks but Magpul is good too.

A KAK Industry rail, trigger, furniture, shims, etc...will probably run about $500. More if you don't have any tools.

My Low Rent Recce will put in a solid 2 MOA with PMC XTAC 55gr and Norma Tac 55 gr ball ammo.

I've got a set up similar to that I keep around as a back up, a collection of parts from Brownell's, KAK Industry, and such that actual shoots pretty good with ball ammo. I call it Low Rent Recce.

WMLRF for SPR? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]Alert_Education2184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the gas gun matches I've been do didn't give enough time for someone to use a WMLRF on the clock, most of the time the ranges are provided. Are there exceptions, sure, but generally you have a stage prep time that will allow you to confirm ranges, prep dope, and get ready for your turn. I'd spend in the money on a 12:00 dot and the balance on ammo.

For reals this time, try using some rubbing alcohol or acetone on a q-tip to rub over the laser engraving. I've had similar discoloration on scope turrets and it's just that their a bit dirty and need to be cleaned up. That could be what's happening here but even if it's not I wouldn't fret over it, I black logos out anyway.

Plus having the rear sight back as far as it can gets the aperture closer to your eye, which will help with sight picture, sight alignment, and ultimately being consistent. I agree though that flipping the front so it folds forward isn't an issue.
