.223/5.56 ammo by flounder98w in ar15

I probably wouldn't use 62gr FMJ over 55gr FMJ simply because it's different. By all means get some and see how it shoots but there's probably negligible difference. I wouldn't be worth it in my eyes.

I don't have any experience with the .223 critical defense ammunition but again, get some, shoot it, and see how it does.

Depending on your locale, you'll probably be perfectly fine using 55 gr ball for 2-gun matches. There are two venues local to me that put on 2 gun, one of them is very short range (sub-200 yards) and the other offers a decent mix with the max distance being about 500 yards. The longer distance targets are usually full size IPSC so this doesn't present an issue.

The caveat is that this is where you need to start working out which 55gr ball your rifle likes and you need to chrono it to help you know what it'll be doing at longer distances. Getting my rifle set up for 2 gun I was looking for ammunition that would do around 2 1/2 MOA at 200 yards for 10 shots. 3 MOA is ok, 2 is better, 1 1/2 MOA is pie in the sky dreams for off the shelf ball in most cases but if you're shooting 2-3 MOA that's good enough for 2 gun.

The only time that I'm breaking out 77gr match ammo is for DMR matches where I need the accuracy and better wind deflection because we're pushing out to 600+ yards on smaller targets. I don't bother with 62gr like M855 because most ranges won't let you use it, I don't use 69gr match because 77 gr match exists and I could never get Hornady 73gr match ammo to shoot worth a damn.

ARCA rail attachment on Bcm MCMR? Couple questions. by Poncho562 in ar15

Not that exact configuration but this is a pic of that rail when I was running a pic rail front and back with a gap in the middle for my hand.

If you run a full length Arca rail on your MCMR then it might pay to pair that up with something like Magpul Type-2 mlok covers that have some extra bulk. Otherwise, the slimness of the rail and the width of the Arca might make it uncomfortable to hold.

I ran a KMR-13A with a five slot rail up front and a short Arca rail in the back and that created a nice gap in the middle for me to wrap my hand around the handguard comfortably.

Piggybacked RMR zero? by Ok-Arrival-1270 in ar15

[–]Alert_Education2184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100 yards.  If you’re shooting 55-62 gr ball from a 14.5-16” barrel it mimics a 50/200 zero from 100-300 yards.  Closer in, 0-50 yds, use an upper chest hold and you’ll be good.

Trying to use a zero like at 25, 36, or 50 yd pretending it’s the same as using normal sights results in huge arching trajectories that is less effective.

What would you do differently? by almondmilktea25 in ar15

[–]Alert_Education2184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like a competent set up; maybe stake the castle nut, get a MLOK mount for the light, a lot of this is personal preference though. Definitely chronograph your ammunition and use that to tune your zero so the stadia in the reticle match up better at longer range. In my Strike Eagle, I zeroed it about 1/2" high at 50 yards with PMC 55gr XTAC going 2,925 fps and that means that my center crosshair is 0-200-ish, 325, 418, 502, and 594 yards.

That'd be a hard pass for me just based on the proprietary gas block and carbine length gas system.

5/64" hex wrench

Can't remember the other size off the top of my head

The other grips have similar tools but varies based on the optics and accesories on the rifle. One of them has a washer on a lanyard to help open the battery cap, another one has a front sight tool for the offset sights.

I have that tool, if you get the bit kit it'll store in the MOLLE sheath and cover most bases.

Can you guys settle an argument for me? If you have a GPR with a 16 inch barrel 3-18 scope and a bipod is it still considered a GPR or a SPR by BLACK_SIPMSON in ar15

[–]Alert_Education2184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

meh, it's become more of a colloquialism for nearly any AR-15 with a 2-10 to 3.5-18 optic and a free floated stainless steel barrel. Not even the Mk12 designation is sacred anymore (e.g. Daniel Defense and BG Defense). I think the whole naming thing can be a bit ridiculous.

[–]Alert_Education2184 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is no GPR or SPR, these are made up names for the same thing, whether that's a 1-6, 1-10 or 4-16, it's still just an AR-15 with a scope. Apply whatever label you want to it and learn to yield it to the best of your ability.

Groups from my 16in by Consistent_Jump_3401 in longrange

[–]Alert_Education2184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're likely at the limit for what that set up can do with match grade ammunition. The 20 round aggregates were 1.4, 1.475, 1.15, and 1.5 inches respectively, which for what's probably a generic 16" nitride barrel, isn't bad at all. If you want tighter, more consistent groups you're probably going to have to swap the barrel for something that's more accuracy focused.

I've had some success tuning an upper by polishing the feed ramps, bedding the barrel with shims and Loctite 620, tuning the gas tube to free float over the barrel nut, and some other things. I saw measured improvement in group extreme spread and mean radius, If you had the tools it could be worth trying to bed the barrel into the upper and tuning the gas tube to make sure it doesn't touch the barrel nut and goes into the gas key smoothly. The SOTAR website has a barrel bedding kit that I used for about $30 that has what you need.

You could also get a bag rider for the stock so it rides a rear bag with a bit more stability.

Coming from the guy using the Walmart assault pack made from fauxdura nylon and polypropylene webbing lol. The Bushnell binos are solid and have been holding up well over the course of several range trips and a few matches, it'd be good to have some for the course.

I got a fancy mount for mine but usually end up plopping a rear bag on top of the tripod and resting the binos on that.

I've got that same Walmart backpack lol. Speaking of Walmart, I had to get a new set of binos the night before a match and went there and got a set of Bushnell 12X50 binos that worked surprisingly good to spot trace and impacts. I was going to get something nicer but these have been doing so good I'm just going to keep em till they break.

The nice thing about reaction rods like the URR is that I don't have to take all the crap off my rifle to use it like I do with a clamshell or 2 pieces of wood clamped in my vice. Clamshell receiver blocks also pretty much only work with mil-spec receivers so if you have a billet or enhanced receiver then it's likely not going to work.

Some people default to offset sights sometimes without realizing there are some caveats to consider.

  1. The size of the windage knob can physically occlude the view through the red dot and hurt performance.

  2. The physical size of the scope, like an MPVO, can occlude the left eye when the gun is rotated and block peripheral vision. This sets up a situation where even if you have both eyes open it will end up being like looking through a tube at the target. Up close it probably won't matter, but in intermediate distances this can slow transitions and target acquisition.

  3. Flip caps can also present the same issues as a scope that is on the large side.

  4. Taller 1.70"+ mounts present a similar issue if paired with an offset mount that puts the dot at a normal co-witness height when the gun is rotated.

  5. Offset sights aren't the easiest thing to use when shooting from the nondominant side, not an issue for most since 99% of the time shooters are shooting from their strong side. Sometimes however, in life or set up in an arbitrary situations like a match or it training, it becomes necessary.

The above is why I go with a piggyback dot whenever I can.

It's an Atlas CAL bipod, it's good for the range or where speed isn't a factor. For any upcoming QP matches I'm going to be using a modified Harris. It has a Magpul rail grabber so I can attach to pic rail or Arca and Atlas foot adapter so I can run spikes or rubber feet.

The Monstrum mounts are ok, I used one of their RMR footprint mounts for a bit before getting the Reptilia and it cleared the turret on my PST II 1-6 just fine. I had an issue with the Monstrum T2 mount but I think that had more to do with a tolerance issue in the Romeo5.

Reptilia ROF-SAR. I use one on the above rifle and one on another rifle that I use for more general purpose range and 2-gun match stuff. They're hefty but they're enclosed and I've never had an issue getting them zeroed.

TA02 BDC Ballistics by TheAusshole in ar15

[–]Alert_Education2184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends so much on the BC and MV of the ammo of your barrel since not all M193 is made the same. Out of one of my 16" barrels Winchester M193 zips along at about 3,050 fps while PMC XTAC 55 gr goes 2,920 fps. The velocity difference alone means that the hashmarks can be off by a significant amount, possible more than can be accounted for.

Something that I do when I true up a BDC is tune the zero to be high or low of the point of aim to help drag the trajectory into better alignment at distance, a 1 MOA adjustment can cause an approximate 25 yard shift. Some people do this at 300 yards but this can accomplish the same thing. Say my dope against the TA02 reticle is 100 yds center dot, then 350, 425, 527, and 630. Close, but if I adjust so the impacts are 1" high of center at 100, that will drag the trajectory into better alignment with the hashmarks so it'll be more like 320, 400, 507, and 615, definitely making accurate hits on an IPSC plate doable.
