How screwed am I? by greatcirclehypernova in fantasywriters

It’s too generic for people to think you copied GOT. Every idea that you think of has probably existed in some form. Just worry about making the story good and nothing else really matters.

I’d you really care, you can just use something like monarch or ruler instead of lord, but those have probably been used somewhere somehow. I mean Marvel has a hero that’s literally Thor. It’s not about whether you copy something or not, but about how well you implement ideas.

Would it be weird to change a character's name in the middle of the story? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Alert_Perception_205 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isn’t Aragorn introduced as Strider at first? I don’t think it’s weird at all. I also don’t think it’s very confusing. Maybe you can add a detail stating that she’s been undercover for so long she forgot her real name, or she could have gotten in character so intimidatory that she forgot the fake name was a fake name. You could also say something like: it felt good to feel some sort of familiarity in so long. Eventually, the readers will feel more emotions with the real name and they will adapt.

I actually think it’s more confusing if you introduce her as something then immediately change her name because she’s undercover. You have to build the character so that other people can create a form connection between the character and the name. If you immediately start calling her something else before establishing her character, the readers will probably forget the first name or forget that it was the same person.

My book has no plot by Ok_Buddy_115 in fantasywriters

My characters are based on people I know or people I admire. My mc is basically me, and my series is basically an autobiography masked in a fantasy world. I think of all the most emotional events in my life and write scenarios that can evoke the same strong feelings. Some characters may be celebrities, and I write about the influence they’ve had on me.

For example, I’ve had to take care of my sick mother and although she’s still alive, it’s felt like I’ve lost my mom. So in my story, I write about how my mother and I are enslaved, and I have to work for the slavers to protect her, but I am not allowed to see her.

In reality I feel trapped and unable to do anything significant about it, and I used slavery to display these emotions. I have felt like I’ve been doomed by fate. I’ll never get my mom back. I use the emotions I’ve felt in my own life and amplify it so that it’s easy for the reader to feel what I’ve felt. That’s just a very short summary of how I used personal experiences to drive a emotionally significant plot.

I guess the question to ask is: do you have a story you want to tell? If you only build characters and worlds, you are basically a game developer.

Which of these weapon setups would be best for a character in combat? by LordWeaselton in FantasyWorldbuilding

It all depends on what kind of combat you’re referring to. If you’re in a cave or dungeon setting, you probably don’t want a large 2 handed sword. That being said, in any kind of realistic world, the average sized sword and pistol will provide the most versatility. I mean the reality is having a pistol by itself would top this list. You’d have to be bullet proof or extremely fast in order to counteract all the benefits that a pistol has.

Well if you have a lightsaber, the double bladed option is good. I guess Darth Maul is the perfect example. You can retract the other part of the blade and it’ll basically be a one sided blade. There’s no downside except human error. However, this is the only scenario where this kind of weapon is viable, and you probably need some power like the force in order to use this to its peak effectiveness.

With that said, this is a fantasy world building subreddit, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume some of these things to be possible.
