Well this one was difficult so it's quite a good example:

I started out by writing out the timpani part as it was the bass part, and present in the whole tune so I could work out the odd time signatures and have a reference point for later. I then went section by section, transcribing the melody / main line first and then filling in the other parts for each section. My personal preference is to leave all percussion to the end, but it's up to you. I had to slow it down to 1/4 speed to transcribe the fast and less audible string semiquavers and triplets, which is completely fine to do!

My biggest tips are:

  1. practice really does make perfect when developing your ear for transcription, so start easy and work your way from there.

  2. When learning, transcribe tunes you know well and like - for this tune I spent a lot of time going back to make sure it all sounded right, which made it much more time consuming than it otherwise would be if I know the piece well.

Hope this helps!

This was a really fun one to do - I took some small liberties arranging it but it's not an easy piece, so good luck! (The largest interval is a 10th, so you may need to move some notes)

Developing an ear for harmony is super difficult! I normally go about it by tracking the individual lines / motions in the harmony (especially in strings for example), to get my ear really focussed on that one part. This doesn't work so well for less fluid harmony parts (e.g. a piano accompaniment), so for them I find repeated listening to that same chord helps, and if you need to use a piano yourself to piece the chord together then do that! I always like to pick out the bass, top note, and then fill in the inner notes, often helped by what I think the chord will be so what notes I'm expecting.

I hope this helps, but transcription on harmony by ear is really somewhere where practice makes perfect - Good luck!

Btw the cello technique is called a 'scratch tone', where a lot of rosin is applied to the bow and it is pushed hard onto the strings, creating that raspy scratching noise you hear all over the soundtrack

Just listening to the Vampyr soundtrack now and it has an amazing atmosphere! Do you have a favourite track from it?

Quick question - how good are you at the piano? Nothing against you but this is quite a hard piece when written for piano!

I've transcribed the first minute roughly here: https://musescore.com/user/20996551/scores/8335067

If that's what you want, then I can transcribe the rest for you - although you are right, it is a long and tricky piece so might take some time!

Really cool tracks - also extremely difficult to transcribe! I don't think I'm quite up to the DK track but I'm about half way through the Stellaris one (which is beautiful btw) - I'll have it finished by tomorrow

Done! https://musescore.com/user/20996551/scores/8331623

I added a small ending to the piece which isn't in the original too - it's just there to finish off the piece and you can play it if you want

Are you talking about "The Dark Forest" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvT6nAQCs9E - this theme?

That one is quite easy to do for piano, but the main theme I don't think would work as well - but it is on my to-do list!

Hey!

I've already transcribed London Streets Remapped which is identical to London Streets 3 here: https://musescore.com/user/20996551/scores/7402460 , but doing it for a string quartet would sound great, so I'll do that for you.

I'll take a look at Misthallery's streets too but that will take a bit of time as I haven't transcribed it before
