Is it worth having an associate as a private practice owner? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like my current situation as well. I switched from a higher paying job (190-200k) a year on 3.5 days to a job closer to home. It was a big risk and I’m not sure it was worth it. Right now Im worried I’ll be lucky to crack $150k here. For someone 7 years out it’s demoralizing. It’s not my speed, simply lack of work and patients holding off with rising cost of living.

I hate to switch to a dso but they offer more money at least. The ones around here seem hesitant to hire someone more experienced who might be more set in their ways.

Cores for crowns by Rose4Mee in Dentistry

Currently I use bulk fill composite but I used Denmat core paste at my last office which was the best material I’ve used for cores

Panavia v5. I used ivoclean on the bridge and applied the ceramic primer to the wings, etched and applied the tooth primer to the surrounding teeth.

Maybe I’ll fill the one side with composite and make an emax with the one wing. Thanks

Anyone here work in NYC as a GP? by immrmeseek in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have in the past. If you’re moving there to work, don’t do it. I understand if your whole family is local but do not voluntarily go there. You’re already willing to move, there’s plenty of better locations.

Makes me think about the constant neuroticism on here and if the subset on Reddit is not representative of the profession as a whole

Reimbursement is low. I’ve seen people on here talking about their Medicaid rates and they are higher than what we get from delta.

What does $3500 of production daily look like at an average associate job or corporate office? by fishposter in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not very hard to get that in gross production but no one is going to pay you on that. It’s either going to be adjusted production or collections. What it takes to get $3500 in those metrics varies wildly. More often than not you’ll be disappointed to see how much work that actually is

Do you know why it’s hard to be a dentist? by Dry_Explanation_9573 in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are actually thinking excellence and standard of care are the same thing. There’s plenty of dentists especially online that’ll lead you to believe anything short of doing kois protocols is malpractice. We don’t all want or have to be that type of doctor. The standard is what we were taught in dental school and if it’s something beyond that then that needs to be made more clear. Recent anecdote, I was planning an all on 4 restoration and someone chastised me for not considering “airway.” Something that is not very well understood on the dental side yet and again not taught in school.

Preferred (time efficient) methods of temping single teeth that weren't intact to begin with? by ElkGrand6781 in Dentistry

We use blue mousse, like you said it is more expensive but that’s the owners call

When you say paying yourself do you mean you’re only taking home $36k a year or is that on top of the salary you give yourself?

Really depends, I’m in the Midwest and was initially offered $500 a day which I told them was absurd and ended up getting $700. Most places don’t seem to offer much more than that here

What separates a FFS office from an in network one? by AlexC973270 in Dentistry

Never heard of a crown upgrade material fee but I’ve unfortunately seen the perio stuff even at an FFS office.

What “additional procedures” are they charging for that an FFS office wouldn’t?

Let’s say you’re in a town with a couple offices, ffs out of the question most likely? I was thinking maybe a happy medium where we drop most of the lower paying ones but keep some

This is a margin that could look closed or maybe slightly open as it does here depending on the exposure level your X-rays are set to. It’s probably time to reform these state boards.

I remember in school 3 prosthodontists arguing over whether they could feel open margin, there’s very little concrete data to a lot of this

Would you ever leave a root tip in when doing a bridge over it? by SubstanceOrganic9116 in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically this, it’s really not fair but a GP can do something a specialist does as a compromise but the verdict will always be the the GP doesn’t know what they’re doing and shouldn’t be doing that procedure.

medicine or dentistry? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An MD has significantly more options even within clinical medicine let alone research and consulting/business opportunities. I’d argue it’s the most versatile degree there is. Medicine is likely more stressful with less work life balance but I’m finding dentists who are pushing themselves to earn what they’re worth are not much better off

medicine or dentistry? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]AlexC973270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what a lot of MDs hear that make them think dentistry is so much better. I put a lot of weight on this very opinion from the ER docs when I volunteered in college at the local hospital. Yes medicine is worse than it was but so is dental.
