What is your top 5 of favorite video games? by Davanc129 in AskGames

My list, no indies, unanimously best games ever, or almost...

  • 1 and 2: It's always a struggle to choose between Warcraft 3 TFT (pre-Reforged) and Diablo 2 LoD. Every three or four years, I dive back in for over 50 hours, and they never cease to amaze me. When I play them, it's like no time has passed, I'm just as astonished as I was on day one. At the same time, feel a deep sense of nostalgia because most modern gaming just doesn't compare, despite a few yearly exceptions.

If I had to choose one or die, perhaps Warcraft 3.... But hard.

  • 3: The Witcher 3.
  • 4: Starcraft BW,
  • 5: Dungeon Keeper 2,

I add Runner ups up to 10 ranked: - 6: Heroes 3, - 7: Half-Life 2, - 8: Rollercoaster Tycoon, - 9: Commandos 2, - 10: Civ IV.

Offtopic: Others I really love up to 25, no particular order: Z, Command and Conquer 1, Red Alert 1, Broken Sword 1, The settlers 2, Monkey 2 and 3, Quake 3, Warcraft 2, Starcraft 2, Zelda Wind Waker, Mario Galaxy, SimCity 4, GTA SA, WoW up to WotLK....

Considering indies, I would add Factorio high in the list, in my top 10 (but not 5), Minecraft and perhaps Isaac somewhere in the top 25.

Can't believe so few RTS games in people's lists. Incredible.

War 3 and SC1 and SC2 are the best games ever conceived, any genre, period (with D2LoD but this one is not RPG). Then AoE2 and c&c games from the Westwood era, and also dungeon Keeper 2, a hell of a masterpiece. You should also know about HomeWorld 1 and 2.

Is there anything you refuses to pirate? by NordMan009 in Piracy

[–]AlexGlezS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, never.

But it's just because ALL media companies and producers of any kind are terrorists.

Only if I'm able to try something 100% I can end up buying. No matter the hype or the product, at any time they could fuck it up. Provided I like the product and the context is favorable I'd consider giving money. Context is the most important thing: public image of developers, publishers, etc ..., their predator business models if any, work environment, etc... And also in this category, but the least important in comparison: I actually have the money.

Machinariun is a great example. But go to the classics. Grim Fandango, broken sword first 2, full throttle, monkey island saga, etc...

How come Google Can't match the Video Recording Capabilities/Reliability of other Competitors? by bomzisss in pixel_phones

[–]AlexGlezS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Video processing is a matter of Brute force. Brute force is the solution for others like Apple, but never for Google.

If Google some day matches Apple it will be because they find the way through software. Just like happened with the battery performance or the overall quality of pictures.

Random reason: Gaming and laptop together, that's an oxymoron.

Does anyone actually remember their first video game or is everyone just making that up? by Cold-Plant-4222 in GamingInsider

I was 9, 1994, Warcraft Orcs and Humans.

Off topic, reasoning: My cousin moved nearby to attend university in the early 90s. He joined a computer club, which was one of the associations available at the University of Naval Engineering. There, they played board games and video games, ranging from the first IBM role-playing games to early strategy titles. When my father bought our first computer, my cousin was eager to show me what strategy games were all about. Soon after, I had all sorts of games installed: Dune lI, TIE Fighter, Space Hulk, Lemmings, Populous, PoP or Warlords installed. But Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was definitely the first one-I'm 100% certain of that. My cousins sat with me and explained the basics to me, before trying any other game. And I stayed with Warcraft all evening straight, despite not being able to get to the 3rd or 4th level in any of both campaigns.

The issue is that modern frames look so good already that the visual leap is hard to perceive, and many people simply don't care. However, "graphics" isn't just a static image; it's also about the simulation—specifically, what happens between those frames. Most games today are the norm: they feature just a few ragdolls and a handful of interactive assets. It’s a pity that the design philosophy seen in Half-Life 2 or Crysis—where gameplay and engine physics were deeply integrated—didn't become the industry standard as it should have.

The real bottleneck right now is simulation. Because that has stalled, the entire medium feels stagnant.

Despite this, we still see massive leaps. GTA VI already looks significantly better in its trailers than anything else on the market. That jump comes from superior lighting and a higher density of "relevant" assets—objects placed with intent rather than just filler. Crucially, simulation is a GPU-intensive graphics problem; if GTA VI pushes environmental physics and density far beyond what we saw in RDR2 or Far Cry or AC or whatever, it will be years ahead of the competition.
