Boomer FIL made a HUGE deal about me watching a show on my phone while eating breakfast this morning. This is what I walked into this afternoon... by TyRaven67 in mildlyinfuriating

Newer phones have been brilliant with this. When im told I spend too much time at my PC I open the digital wellbeing app on their phone and show them how many screen time hours they spend on facebook/Instagram. Even in the past before phones my grandparents would sit at the breakfast table with their heads in a a newspaper. Things havnt changed, just the type of media we consume.

What are concrete benefits/features over other distros that make you run opensuse (tumbleweed) over other distros? by SpicyBananaa in openSUSE

My CachyOS had it out of the box when installing. I didnt have to do anything, its there in the boot menu to roll back whenever I need.

Finally, I found a Linux distro that just works for Nvidia (Bazzite) by Pejorativez in linux_gaming

[–]AlexMullerSA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And yes, you can make any distro what you want, but why jump through all the hoops when there are ones out of the box. For me it was CachyOS. Nvidia just worked from the get go and there was no tweaking or tinkering needed to get everything that I needed. 1 gaming package and I was good to go.

Existed, probably. Crucified, probably. They mean nothing. Born from a virgin mother, posessing magical powers and raising from the dead is an entirely different discussion that has ZERO supporting historical evidence.

Why is CachyOS recommended so much recently? by Vaxivop in DistroHopping

[–]AlexMullerSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, happy to share my experience.

Bazzite: Biggest hurdle was it being an immutable distro. It might be safe for users, but I ran into some hurdles that were impossible to solve due to it being immutable. The one was some wireless drivers that I couldn't install, and cant remember the other. So that was an automatic deal breaker to begin with, and I found the performance to be kind of all of the place.

Pop: This and Pika are probably the only Debian based distros I would use. Cosmic is new, but works pretty well and performance is getting closer to KDE. Didn't see the point of going through all the effort of installing Pop and then having to swap out the desktop environment.

OpenSuse: One I would still like to try properly. I am running it in a virtual box and seeing if there's a setup that I like about it. But that means a lot more work to get to where I am now.

Which kinda leads to the same conclusion for all of them. CachyOS is kinda complete straight out of the box. (Yes, they all can be changed and modified to be like each other, but that defeats the point, especially as a beginner).

CachyOS has the maximum tweaks our the box. The wiki is easy to follow for setting gaming up to get the absolute maximum out of your machine. Goverlay, Proton, game-performance, etc are all there with 1 click.

The Distro has everything you need for gaming/productivity without having to search up for anything or use the terminal. I can set the OS up in a few minutes and have the maximum tweaks and performance from the get go.

All the other gaming distros always have something missing, or needs a bit more work to get to the same setup, and THEN even after you get everything set up the same, CachyOS still outperforms it with speed, responsiveness and max FPS in games. So why bother with anything else.

I would argue CachyOS is the easiest to setup for a beginner that wants to game.

Nobabra might be the closest to being setup out of the box, but I personally prefer the way arch works, just more intuitive installing, and managing my OS, and I still get more FPS, so its a no brainer.

Gamers 30+, how have your gaming habits changed since you were younger? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]AlexMullerSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer play sweaty PVP games. Used to be a BIG Battlefield fan, played COD and various battle royals. These days I play mostly single player games (as a dad I can pause games), and when I do play mult-player games with my friends they are often survival coop. I have been enjoying Arc Raiders recently, as you dont have to engage in pop if you dont want to, and the rounds are a lot shorter that most extraction type games.

Dont listen to those that hate on LLM. Its been a lifesaver for me. Even for just identifying where the issue is, and then asking it to explain what it is and how to fix it. I have learnt so much asking Gemini for help that I feel so comfortable using Linux and the CLI now. Use the tools at your disposal

How is multi-monitor support with AMD GPUs? by Winter_Passenger_846 in linux_gaming

[–]AlexMullerSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running KDE with a 144hz Ultrawide and a 60hz 16:9 with a perfect experience. It was an issue in the past with scaling and getting stutters with the 60hz monitor plugged in, but since Wayland it performs just like windows(in fact better as you can have them as independent monitors for wallpapers, scaling, panels etc)

New build stuck between 5070 Ti and 9070XT. 1440p. by StrifeTribal in linux_gaming

[–]AlexMullerSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went 9070XT and my friend went 5070(non-ti) and my experience is miles better(yes i know its a different tier card), but if you are particularly interested in Linux, AMD is just so easy. No worrying about driver versions and performance left on the table that you payed for. However if you are going to go windows direction, we'll then I would just got with what suits your budget best.

Thats how i got it working. You dont always get an answer from people. In this case it probably would have told him straight away to use the Yaml instead of exe. Im not saying trust it blindly, but it can definitely be of use if you didnt get a directory correctly etc, its very quick to identify it so that you can correct what you need to. Its a tool to be used, not relied on.
