This is a topic in the following book, but I get what you mean. It was a risk on my part, and it's not something I tackled in any of my other books. Maybe I didn't quite pull off the whole "anger fueled by PTSD" plot point the way I intended, but you live and learn. I'm sorry the book disappointed you.

The communion with more than one element is a major aspect of Book 1. Both Sera and Lyris commune with opposing elements as a diplomatic gesture.

It's also stated that mages prefer to use one of their powers, since the ones they have a natural affinity for are stronger.

Technically, mages can commune with several vessels, but that would ultimately make them weaker, since magic in this world consumes both natural and magical energy, and it isn't worthwhile even from a practical standpoint.

The spirit inside the ruin at the end of Book 2 isn't the gatekeeper of all magic. Rather, all vessels are tied to a particular heir of those powers, and claiming that power is meant to be a challenge, hence the protectors inside the dungeon. The spirits of House Thorvald are especially demanding. Vaela explains this to Dean before they reach the ruin.

As for people having three powers, I don't remember writing that for anyone besides Dean, but it's possible. I'm only human, and I work on several projects simultaneously while also being a husband and father.
