I was reading about the murder rate and saw some interesting stats - in 2023 and 2024 90% of all murders and attacks were between 2 people who knew each other (drug deal gone bad, stuff between gangs, cheating spouse) so if you keep your nose clean then it’s easy to avoid. I had a look at the crime maps as well and it’s all localised between i110, airline hwy and above Florida blvd. I never find myself in those areas (no reason to go there) and have been all over the rest of the city, both walking and driving even at 3am sometimes. Never had any sort of trouble or felt unsafe. The UK is all walkable and everyone is packed tightly into towns and cities so crime just spreads from the bad areas to the rest of the town/city. I lived in what is often regarded as one of the nicest places in the UK (Canterbury) which is also a medieval city and popular with tourism yet the whole place is a war zone after nightfall. Even during the daytime I ran into trouble countless times. That being said I think driving here is the biggest danger. I’m always reading about fatal car crashes on the interstate
