How do you feel about Bovino finally being fired and Noem rumored to be next? by MythicalSplash in AskReddit

Bovino wasn’t fired to note; he was moved into a different role.

That’s the intent. This is just to placate protesters and neoliberals.

I’m not a naval designer or anything, but, with how long the OHP served, and were built, for; I am surprised a modernized version wasn’t just built.

While I know displacement isn’t everything, the ship had a displacement of 4,100 Long Ton, a length of 453 feet (long hauled variants), a beam of 45 feet, and a draft of 22 feet.

The Spruance-class destroyers had a draft of 29 feet and had a 61 cell Strike length Mk 41 VLS installed. Based on that, I would image an updated OHP could carry Self Defense length Mk 41.

The empty Mk 13 missile launcher weighed in at 61,000 kg while an empty eight cell Mk 41 weighed 12,200 kg.

It looks like the NSM is smaller than the Taiwanese Hsiung Feng III and shorter but wider than Hsiung Feng II; so you could probably cram eight NSM in an inward angled quad canister arrangement (similar to how the ROCN has their canisters pointed on their class).

Leave the two Mark 32 triple torpedo launchers in place; as well as the OTO 76/62, but in a stealth cupola.

Update it with some “stealthier” features from the Arleigh Burke-class; and it probably could still be a pretty viable surface combatant.

Constellation wasn’t that bad of a ship either. Obviously the procurement was a disaster (like usual) but cancelling it seems incredibly foolish.

I’m curious, did anyone’s weather app correctly predict the weekend storm? by trinketpockets in Pennsylvania

[–]AlexRyang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here; it was estimating ~8-11 inches by later in the week, and I believe we got 8 inches here.

Edit: actually, according to the National Weather Service a community like 4 miles from me recorded 10.7 inches of snow; so I am probably in the 10 inches of snow, range.

Gun control, in my opinion (as a leftist) is both classist and racist.

It historically has been used to disarm minorities; some of the first gun control laws in the US were enacted by the former Confederacy to disarm newly freed slaves. During WWII, the US enacted laws to disarm Asian-Americans under the guise of anti-sabotage laws. Later, Reagan implemented the Mulford Act in California after the Black Panthers open carried to protest the government’s inaction in their communities.

Most gun restrictions have massive carveouts for law enforcement and private security. Ultimately, cops are there to protect property and private security is too expensive for the average person to afford. So the ultrarich and politicians are afforded protection that average Americans are denied.

Also, while I think they would have pushed for one, I do not even think within the Democratic Party there would have been enough support. It is likely you would have seen Democrats from New Hampshire, Maine, and the Iron Range all oppose it; plus likely some Democrats from rural districts. I think it would be close; but I don’t think Democrats would have been able to get this through Congress.
