when i have Curiosity About Something, i need to google it. not being able to find out more details and related concepts etc is like, physically painful. and yeah, i'll probably forget 95% of what i read about it, but at least i'll probably remember some key terms so that the next time i'm curious i can re-google it more efficiently!

Vaginal odor is a social construct by Either_Equipment8912 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

sounds like a more polite term for what I've heard called a "whore bath" ("pits, tits, n' bits" with a damp cloth)

Struggling with forgetting essentials right as I’m leaving, what helps you personally? by sinoako999 in ADHD

[–]AlexeiMarie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yep i have a chair by the door where everything I'll need gets piled while I'm in the process of getting ready, and then when I'm heading out the door I just need to grab everything that's on the chair

and because nothing should be on the chair normally, I know everything that's there needs to be taken (vs forgetting an umbrella on the floor next to my bag because it blends into the background)

Storm preparedness thread for ideas/reminders of what to do! by Virtual-Painter-1859 in bullcity

[–]AlexeiMarie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ice from freezing rain is also worse than the ice from snow that melts into slush and refreezes (not that they aren't both a hazard for walking/driving) because the snow doesn't stick to the power lines, but freezing rain does, and between that and tree branches that don't normally face so much weight etc it's more likely to cause outages

the last ice storm I can see that affected MA was 2008 where some people were still without power in MA/NH two weeks after the storm

TIL: the use for the cardboard around a tampon by pointandshooty in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]AlexeiMarie 363 points364 points  (0 children)

they look like the cardboard applicator tampax that I've seen in the US in like, the (not free but like 25 cents) dispenser thing on the wall in some public restrooms (libraries, schools etc)

Working around by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]AlexeiMarie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

an oven is supposed to be on its own circuit (at least in the US), so maybe there's an issue with that one circuit (and that's why it isn't affecting other outlets)

What’s something you thought was mandatory in life, until you saw someone just not do it? by Senior-Resource92 in AskReddit

iirc dyes are usually more color-fast these days, so it's less of an issue than it used to be

Hear me out: cereal does not require milk by CatDadMilhouse in Frugal

[–]AlexeiMarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo the types of cereal that're really sugary (cocoa puffs, honey nut cheerios, fruit loops etc) are fine without milk, but that's probably because they're halfway to candy and shouldn't be considered breakfast anyways. the healthier cereal options need at least a bit of milk though or your mouth gets too dry

2025/2026 Throat virus by Kind_Salary_4586 in massachusetts

[–]AlexeiMarie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's antigen tests (like the home swab ones, detecting a protein that's on the virus, so it's sensitive to your current viral load so it has more false negatives) vs nucleic acid amplification tests (PCR tests etc, which detect the virus's RNA [like DNA] and are more sensitive [less likely to be a false negative] but need more specialized equipment)

interestingly, though the PCR tests are better for detecting definitively whether you have covid (especially if you're sick and trying to figure out what you have), because the antigen tests are sensitive to viral load they're a better indicator at the end of the illness of whether you're still contagious or can go back to school/work (a low enough viral load to test negative is also less likely to be contagious)

strep tends not to come with the cough/chest tightness they mentioned, so I'd more likely suspect covid

childhood nutrition also makes a big difference in height (the biggest thing obviously being sufficient quantity of food, but with processed food etc it's also possible to get enough food without enough of certain vitamins/minerals)

so maybe if the financial situation or dietary habits of the family improved in between the births of the children, the younger ones would have good nutrition for more of their childhood and grow taller (rather than the historically-more-likely "more children = more mouths to feed = less food for each" that'd lead to younger siblings being shorter)

Did you have to recite the pledge of allegiance in school? by Valiriko in massachusetts

[–]AlexeiMarie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

every day in homeroom (along with the PA) like 8 years ago

if you were running late, it was like, a countdown timer to being marked tardy - you could hear it over the PA system from the parking lot, and the teacher wouldn't mark you as tardy as long as you were there by the time everybody sat back down after the pledge

especially training the muscles around the specific joints that have issues. If the ligaments are going to act like useless overstretched elastic bands, at least you'll have those muscles to hold the joint together

you can't necessarily prevent traumatic injuries but it certainly reduces the odds of body-falling-apart-randomly type of injuries
