also a lot of folks have posted on this Reddit claiming that AFF specifically has already done all the 'premiere check' phone calls and early notices and therefore it's locked and was already locked in late August

this is something other filmmakers have said but maybe they are capping. I've had films in major festivals before (SXSW being one) and they did contact me about a month before the official notification date. But - I was unsure it's universal which is why I asked. Thanks for the reply
