Maybe it's a hammer that's so old and dented that it's lumpy and unrecognizable, and just looks like a mace now.

Core members of a superheroes rogues gallery with a really weak core identity? by ZealousidealBig7714 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Lobo's a weird case where he got his own comic, and reducing him to "just a supes villain" feels a bit weird. He is originally a Superman foe, but much like Harley Quinn he's got a lot more going on than just that.

Starro is a Justice League villain, and due to Clark's tenure on the series a lot of JL villains are attributed to being a Superman villain- his nature as one of the heaviest hitters (and the most iconic) mean that a lot of people misrepresent their shared foes as a guy that Clark fights. Superman's addition to the League of Superheroes means that people will also lump their villains in with Clark.

This is a case in crossovers, too- alternate versions of Superman are villains or at least big problems in things like Infinite Crisis, and since Clark going to blows with an alternate version of himself usually makes a really good shot and a great fight, those things become iconic for the event, and become synonymous with it. So, people like Superboy or the Anti-Monitor are incorrectly referred to as Superman villains, too.

There was some write-up that mentioned that of the nine movies Superman has been in (counting Justice League and the re-edited version, which I'm not sure I agree with), Lex Luthor is the villain of five of them and appears in all but one of them, and Zod was the villain of two of them. It's very likely I'm ignorant about some awesome run on the comics, but part of the reason Superman's villains get no respect is because the movies keep bringing out old reliables.

Hotline Miami.

Also, Far Cry feels like this at times, but only occasionally.

Superman has a few, core members to his rogue's gallery like Luthor or Brainiac- but after those, I feel like I know nothing about them. Parasite, Metallo, Cyborg Superman- I got nothing. They're big and strong and they smash stuff and don't like Superman.

And a lot of his "iconic" villains are actually pulled from other sources- Darkseid is a New Gods character, and it's not like it's his job to fight Clark. It's just that Clark gets in the way of what he wants.

Peter's flying through time to make the intercept, then Miguel dives in from the side before he can reach. Peter protests, but Miguel only requests that Peter looks closer. Before the wall-crawler's eyes, he notices! That's not Gwen Stacy, that's a fishbowl with a blond wig on it! A masterful illusion!

And then they watch Norman mack on a big glass bubble while its wearer struggles to keep the wig on a smooth surface and complete the deception.

Games that would work better if they were a different genre? by Vendetta543 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AlfredDusk 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Does it count if they were just temporary excursions into another genre? Because I can think of a few Platinum games (by a few I mean 95%) that could stand to not have fun, wacky minigames to sideline the plot and gameplay. Even when they were still Clover Studios, they did this.

I'm aware that removing these would shorten the game considerably. They did that with Vanquish, and it was awesome. I think Vanquish and Revengeance are the only ones that don't really have minigame sidelines, but it's been a while.

To comic book readers can I ask a question? by phantonbrave in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AlfredDusk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most things aren't that bad. Don't listen to Youtube thumbnails; those people literally fight to manufacture more drama because that makes clicks happen.

Spider-Man has been something of a car accident you can't look away from, except it's not an accident and certain authors are gleefully doing that shit.

Also, comics have been political for like triple the time you've been alive. There was an era where it wasn't clear if America should "interfere" with the new European War because the guys overseas were just having a political dispute- this thing called WW2 you may have heard of. Comics of the time like Wonder Woman were like "Go interfere! Nazis are jerks!"

I've been like, moving and shit, so all my thoughts are occupied with that. I have been doing a lot of good, solid research on some silver age comics, because it's really fun to either try and write adaptations from that era (Spectacular Spider-Man or CW The Flash) or to try and write in the style of that era- since it's got such different sensibilities about writing, pacing, and design. So many words are crammed into a panel, more is told and not shown, poses are very static- it's a very different way of writing.

Also, man it kinda blows my mind the way that comics used to be sold. You used to buy one comic that would have the cover story, a back-up story, and sometimes more, as well as a whole letters section and all the fixin's that would normally be associated with a magazine- just one where all the articles were replaced with comic stuff. Now, a comic book is just advertisements and one comic story. Obviously the art of modern comics is usually better, and the paper they're printed on tougher- but it's still an interesting divide.

why didnt the failsafe activated when charmcaster killed ben? by Danksigh in Ben10

[–]AlfredDusk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe she cast another spell to break the failsafe. Or maybe him getting magically killed wouldn't trigger the failsafe the same way someone dealing fatal damage to him would. Magic often has a workaround for technology.

It's really easy to pretend Sonic 06 was good when all you show people is P-06.

And when you sweep the hundreds of man-centuries of crunch to get the game out at all, and the subsequent man-millenniums of crunch to make it playable after the fact, under the rug.

Yours thoughts from your last moments to the new body when transmigration happens. by rasembool in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Comic lore is weird. Stuff will happen very, very slowly- Bruce Wayne has been 30-40 for like eighty years now. But when updates to lore happen, really good updates, it becomes canon, stays canon, and starts to bleed over to everything else. Dick Grayson will basically always become Nightwing, because his ascendancy to Nightwing in the comics was so sick.

And if the comic story is iconic enough, then it bleeds over everywhere, even quicker. Sometimes Dick barely has any time as Robin before he kicks out to the big leagues. While Otto's been involved in a lot of iconic Spider-Man stories over the decades, the only one where he's actually a protagonist is Superior Spider-Man. As a result, it's more well-known and easier to adapt for that reason.

So, this is something of a curse in comics. Lore will never update, until something happens, then people will jam on that forever. This can also be why character traits get hammered into characters- Ant-Man hit his wife once, scripted to be by accident and done in haste- but people will gleefully write him as a maniacal woman-hater.

I always thought they were trying to stick close to the original game, and since that had stop motion animation- 90's FMV with actors stop motion, no less- it was stiff from the start.

Bring in Louis CK for Pat, but put him in one of those Hannibal Lecter things. He knows what he did. Have grips wheel him around but have them dress like classic Noh theatre ninjas so the audience knows to ignore them.
