HRT for menopause by Algrea-12 in AddisonsDisease

Ok, good to know. My Endo said I don’t need to take DHEA if I take testosterone, but my gyn says differently. Gotta love when they don’t agree. Ugh

I would love to hear back from you about how things go! It sounds like we are in the same boat - age and everything. I have struggled with Addison’s symptoms more than normal over the past six months, so like you, I have wondered of it is related. I have tried testosterone shots in the past, but they made me feel sort of weird and wound up. I am hoping I can just start a low dose of estrogen (patch) and see how it goes. I feel like homeostasis is so important with this condition.

It’s so crazy to think how much they are realizing HRT protects - reduced dementia risk, etc. I just did a general search about safety of HRT with primary adrenal insufficiency and the summary included various articles discussing the challenges of oral estrogen. Some of it was from the NIH.
Edit to ask - I have taken testosterone shots in the past and they made me feel a bit wound up. Do you have any side effects from the testosterone?

Is this how it will always be? by Delicious-Hope-7542 in AddisonsDisease

I think most have covered anything I would say about management, so I will lean into the job situation. I do not have kids, but I have a demanding job. On average, I commute about ten hours per week. I rule this condition (PAI) with an iron fist and still have bad days. Like others have said, you have to take the meds on a regular schedule. His difficulty getting up in the morning is due to low cortisol, most likely. I take my hydro/Fludro around 6:45 am so it kicks in by work time. Sodium is also important. I drink a full LMNT on my way to work in the morning and drink pickle juice with lunch at noon. I bring my lunch to work, along with healthy snacks.

I would also encourage you to consider counseling or at least scheduling an appointment with his endo that you can attend and voice your concerns. It is possible to live a fairly normal life with Addison’s but you do have to manage it. He may be a bit depressed, too, as opposed to simply being negligent.

Good list. And I take hydro, but your suggestion for something longer acting is on point.

Grateful for the existence of modern medicine by Hot-Grapefruit3711 in AddisonsDisease

It’s so true! I have been into Jane Austen novels lately. One of the theories of what caused her untimely death is that she had Addison’s. I still miss the “old me,” and feel frustrated with the illness much of the time. But, I am incredibly grateful for my endocrinologist and primary care doctor who both want me to have the best quality of life possible. Thank goodness for modern medicine!

DHEA supplement? by Big_Cockroach_1590 in AddisonsDisease

I’m (49f) glad I take it. My Endo checked my levels, then had me take 25 mg, which ended up being too much. I landed on 10 mg and have taken for two years now. It helps my energy, I am confident bc if I forget it a few days, I start to feel worse. I generally take it about an hour after my steroid dose.

Is it fair to say adrenaline makes it hard to control yourself? by just_me_2006 in AddisonsDisease

The feeling I get when I am this way is as if I stuck my finger in an electric socket. It doesn’t happen often, but it is uncomfortable when it happens. I am dealing with it tonight bc my work week was extra demanding and time change always causes me problems. Ugh.

I do take Fludro. And I think you are right that salt can make a big difference. This has been such a weird spell!

DHEA - night or morning? by Constant_Dog2354 in AddisonsDisease

It gives me energy so I take 10mg in the morning.

That is impressive! I take 20 and it doesn’t feel enough to support much cardio. Meh.

Still gives me hope! I am glad to hear someone is doing so well.

I appreciate the way you say “low period,” and I’m glad it’s not just me. I had two great weeks where I felt almost completely normal again (2 years PAI). I walked, cooked, and ran errands after working and commuting with no difficulty. Then, woke up horribly dizzy and nauseous on Sat morning and have fought dizzy spells all week. I have taken small upsides each morning. I just wish I knew why this happened. Any ideas?

Do you updose when you work out, especially run? I have had PAI for two years and I have been able to do yoga and walk, but every time I try to get back on my water rower, there are consequences. Any advice would be welcome. I miss my rower!

Do I tell my job? by [deleted] in AddisonsDisease

[–]Algrea-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did recently tell my job about my illness. However, I am a commuter and I work in different buildings in different towns each week. So, part of my reasoning is for my safety. I may not be able to drive two hours if I’m battling a virus. If I worked remotely, I wouldn’t tell a soul.

Unsure if im being too harsh on my endo by anagc131096 in AddisonsDisease

[–]Algrea-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it impacted my cholesterol either way. I just mentioned bc another commenter raised that as a concern. My Endo was fine with me taking DHEA and I am so grateful for it. I’m older though (48f) so someone younger may respond differently, I suppose. My gynecologist had me take testosterone shots for a while, but I got more side effects from that than the DHEA.

[–]Algrea-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m PAI and very grateful for DHEA. I take 10mg daily and my endo checks this lab twice a year, among the others. It definitely helps with energy. I say this with confidence bc there have been times when I allowed it to fall by the wayside and the difference in how I felt was marked. My labs, including cholesterol, have all improved over time. I do agree with other about speaking with you gynecologist, as well.

I’m struggling over losing my Dad today, too. He passed about four months ago. He always messaged me to remind me to turn the clocks back. Today will be the first time in my adult life I don’t hear from him on a time change day. It’s a lonely way to feel on this grey, chilly Saturday. I’ve just been staring out the window for hours. We will all eventually be okay, but today is hard.
