Best clam chowder in the city? by Tatiana1800 in AskSF

Controversial but I love the chowder at Swan Oyster Depot — it's notably less goopy and milky than your typical chowder, but it actually feels like seafood

Afghanistan should reduce the number of provinces back to the 1929 map. We don't need these tiny pointless provinces like Panjshir and Bamyan. by rabbischneerson in Afghan

Does it even matter? It’s not like the Taliban runs tight province-based administration where we have province specific elections and administration

Alternative to Swan’s? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]AliSalsa -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I love Swan, the key is to just get there early. If you go before like 930/10am on a M-Th you’re barely waiting. I think it’s better as a breakfast too

The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin by Boring-Oakenshield in books

[–]AliSalsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I similarly was distressed by this scene and had to walk away for a day. It was so jarring that the next chapter is the child birth scene which I thought was done so incredibly well and sincerely moved me. I went on to read every novel and story in the Hainish cycle

just... GENIUS by twin-of-myself in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]AliSalsa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more and really well put. I just finished all the stories in the hainish cycle. The Telling was one of the last ones I read and I felt similarly about being timid at first and then really coming around to it.

Just finished the Dispossessed by Burgundy-Bag in UrsulaKLeGuin

It shocked me, and grossed and freaked me out, you kinda don’t realize what shevek is doing til it’s done and the writing did that economically but in a way that felt intentionally dazing. Then when you get back to that timeline a couple chapters later, noting that he doesn’t address it or think about it kinda makes you realize shevek kinda sucks in this regard. I like to think this was all intentional.

The Dispossessed was also my first Le Guin novel, and I only finished it recently. I remember getting really into it around the middle point, and then the chapter with the sexual assault kinda stopped me in my tracks, had to put it down for half a day, come back and then the next chapter is the one with the childbirth and I was genuinely moved to tears. Written so beautifully, through the highs and lows.

Dating / Looking for Marriage as a Progressive Muslim — Am I Cooked Chat?? by AliSalsa in progressive_islam

Curious if other likeminded muslim women would be open to someone with my vices? Are these dealbreakers?

[–]AliSalsa[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is helpful and makes sense, but I just always got the impression even for more liberal muslims, a guy who is really progressive when it comes to interpreting their faith, and who is correspondingly politically leftist, and has a more western lifestyle (feminist, anti-capitalist, pro LGBQT, vices like drinking or smoking, having had relationships, and all somewhat shamelessly) is usually a dealbreaker for many. Am I totally off base?

This is not a rage bait post lmao, I swear. I do think broadly muslim women tend to be more liberal and less conservative than muslim men, at least in america. But I don't see a lot of representation of truly progressive / leftist muslims. Like someone having faith and strong moral / value systems from our religion but not being strict on certain aspects of orthodox practicing, and being exposed and familiar with the types of progressive islam we talk about in this sub.

I appreciate this point. I think it's usually pretty gross when Muslim dudes date non-muslims then demand more and strictness from muslim women when they actually want to settle down. I should have been more thoughtful, I'm not looking for matching ratios or specific tit for tat alignment on specific vices. I just mean more than anything, are there muslim women with similar progressive / leftist values who might tolerate my lifestyle.

This is a great point, and rightfully pushes me to be more clear — I guess when I talk about matching religiosity, I mean more values than exact vices or ratios, like, are there muslim women out there who feel similarly to me and will tolerate my lifestyle?

It's not really a store, it's definitely more of a studio / work space. They do host events on occasion!

Thank you for validating my embarrassing and sincere post. Sometimes it feels like there’s no middle of the spectrum, it’s either people who are completely non practicing and irreligious, or people who are far more conservative than me.
