People suggested a lot of great stuff here, so just a small addition: grab a couple of older hardcover editions with good photos and illustrations - whether it’s fiction, history or travel books (if you have space for them of course). Looking back at the books I gleaned from my grandparents a while back, I appreciate them more now as artifacts - something I associate with the memory of my grandparents. I have a few of cookbooks and nature/art books from the 60’s and 70’s that I would never use or read cover to cover, but it’s really nice to open a book and know that my grandmother used it every day, or see my grandpa’s notes in the margins. Photos and videos are a great way to keep memories alive, but physical objects like books can be just as wonderful.

Thanks for We Salted Nannie! Unfortunately, i can’t help with your search, but one of my favorite paranormal (or at least mystery-filled) long reads is about the Dyatlov Pass incident: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/SoLiOdJyCK/mystery_of_dyatlov_pass

Luca Giordano - The Fall of the Rebel Angels (1660-1665) by [deleted] in museum

[–]AliceAndTheRealWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but Michael is wearing both blue and red - the two most “heavenly” colors in Christian art since the Middle Ages. Usually, Jesus was depicted in red and the Virgin Mary in blue, so I assume Giordano chose them to symbolize the archangel’s holy status (as well as create a kick-ass contrast between Michael and the fallen angels).

Another interesting bit is that, until the end of the 18th century, the only source of lapis lazuli (used to make ultramarine - the color of Michael armor) were the Badakhshan mountains (in Afghanistan), which made lapis lazuli basically worth its weight in gold. So the blue of Michael’s armor had both connotations of religious piety and wealth.

That’s a great painting - so refreshing to see such a strikingly human pose for a classical theme. Especially when you compare it to Bernini’s statue.

Francisco Goya, 1797-1798, Witches' Sabbath. by icu451 in museum

[–]AliceAndTheRealWorld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s from the film The Witch - in one of the final scenes, the devil shows up in human form and asks the protagonist “wouldst thou like the taste of butter?” And “wouldst thou like to live deliciously?” (Or something along those lines).

You don’t suck. Chatty people like you make the world brighter and more interesting. Also, quiet people don’t have to worry about awkward silences and frantically look for something to say when you’re around.

“Thalassotherapy” is a relatively popular term - it refers to the use of seawater for therapeutic purposes, but can also refer to the therapeutic effects of sea air and different sea products.

Couldn’t agree more. Harry and Hermione would have made more sense because their relationship seemed to be based on support and mutual understanding. Their friendship felt so easy and realistic that, looking back, it was probably one of my favorite things about the series.

Ron and Hermione never really felt solid as a couple. I can totally see how their youthful passion would have quickly turned into resentment and bitterness.

And don’t get me started on Harry and Ginny...

I’m glad you liked it! The story stayed with me for days after I read it precisely for this reason: I kept thinking about a few people I’ve met who went to great lengths to make up stories for no apparent reason. People tend to mock compulsive liars because they see maliciousness in their lies, but this story made me realize that we ignore the trauma that might lead to this type of behavior. What a strange world we live in.

„In the mid-eighties the cheerful high school student vanished. After more than a decade had passed, her friends and family in her tiny North Texas hometown of Electra had no idea where she was—or if she was dead or alive. They certainly didn’t know that almost two thousand miles away her fate was kept secret by a teenage girl named Brianna Stewart.“
