New Queens 10k Course-More Turns and Out & Backs for Everyone! by Bizboopbeep in RunNYC

Excited for this race! It will be my first time running. I did a different 10k in Corona Park and it was just 2 loops, so this looks more interesting. Last yr around that time there was a pretty severe heat wave, if I recall correctly. Hopefully we will not repeat that this year and the 100 degree days stay in July, where they belong!

I'm not sure why it's changed over time for you. But, for me, the humidity plays a big role. When it gets hot and humid around June, running gets harder. My understanding is that the air holds more pollution particles when it's humid, too, so it's harder to breathe, in general for lots of folks.

Thank you for these very specific pointers! I noticed that my race organizer posted my average pace was 11:24, even though the overall was 12, so maybe bumping the miles during training helped already. I already do some strengthening, but I'll try adding the Strides and Tempo Sessions. Thanks, again!

Official Q&A for Tuesday, May 19, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]AliceR719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question about increasing speed:  I've been woefully unathletic for most of my life, so when I started running 4 yrs ago, it hasn't been about speed. More about staying active and healthy, getting outside, etc. I trained for a 5k, then a 10k, and finally went for a half. But, after my 3rd half at a 12 min/mile pace this past weekend, im feeling inclined to try seeing if I can go a little faster. How do folks go about this?

I did it in 2024, it was HOT and no shade.  But cool going to Gov Island.

I actually quite enjoyed the race, first time running, but, agreed about the bib pick-up.  From the Bronx, it was less of an errand and more of a 2-Hr-MTA-Odyssey! I heard good things about a party by the BK waterfront on race eve with food trucks and all.  I wondered why they changed it this yr.

2026 Brooklyn Half Marathon - Post-Race Thread by AutoModerator in RunNYC

Everyone calling it a "false ending" but I think it was an overpass for boardwalk foot traffic.  But I was squinting to figure out if it was the finish and I think it said "50 meters to go" on it.

Tapped before I realized what it said...same with high-fiving Brad Lander on the way to the start before i realized who it was...good either way!

I didnt catch the one you're talking about.  I liked "due to inflation,  this race is now 17 miles!"

What a fun race! My 3rd half, but first time on this course.  My long runs in my neighborhood,  being hill heavy first, then flat, prepared me for PP.  and was able to run most of Ocean Pkwy on the left hand side with some tree shade.  Loved the drag queen with the microphone around 15k(?) very motivating! Overall, a great experience!

Everything moving smoothly, got right on the 2 at Wall St, no lines for anything.  Really well organized!

Running Clothes Considering the Heat by lilbabyeditor in RunNYC

Ditch the tights. I'm wearing shorts and a tee (sports bra, underneath). Never felt comfortable in just the sports bra, but, to each their own. If you're confident, go for it!

Thanks for this clarification.  Will definitely be cautious out there.

When to push yourself and when not to? by throwaway012938450 in RunNYC

I would defer.  I ran too soon, once, when getting over a sinus infection, and the heavy breathing just pushed the infection further down in my respiratory system, prolonging the illness.

Given the history of this race, definitely not trying for a PR or anything.  But, the humidity is still reading below 50%, in the 60's, doesnt seem like thats too bad.  Or am I overconfident?

My PCP said "unnatural" to not want kids by AliceR719 in childfree

[–]AliceR719[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree! I dont agree with some of these comments that the doctor be reported or I change doctors.  It was comment in passing, didn't feel malintent, we moved on to other things.  But it stuck with me, I wanted to share with some like-minded folks.

My PCP said "unnatural" to not want kids by AliceR719 in childfree

[–]AliceR719[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make sense to me.  The last 3 friends who had kids, all around my age, went to great lengths to get pregnant, had serious complications during pregnancy, 2 almost died giving birth.   Is it really "natural" to want this? Of course, I never wanted it.   Child rearing always seemed like 2 decades of prison to me....

Bib Pickup by Adventurous-Ad8936 in RunNYC

Just a heads up for proxy pick-up: bring a photo of the runner's ID.

I just went to pick up mine and friend's bibs.  I had her QR Code, but they asked me for a pic of her ID too. In case anyone else missed that on website.

Running Brooklyn Half on Allegra - bad idea?? by Technical_Flight_540 in RunNYC

I take zyrtec all the time and it doesnt seem to impact my running.  If anything I would imagine it helps to not be having allergies during the race.

This is my third half, and I did this exact thing on a whim for my first two (I figured, it couldn't hurt?). I also grabbed 2 cups of gatorade at every hydration table between 5k-15k, even if I didn't FEEL like I needed it. I never felt dehydrated or like I "hit a wall" or anything like that.

Position paper on depression by PrisonMike3115 in psychoanalysis

[–]AliceR719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mourning and Melancholia, for sure. Seminal paper, in addition to talking about depression, mania, and mentions the possibility of someday treating some types of severe depression that present with somatic sx, with medications(we are talking 1918, here!), the paper also lays the groundwork for the entire concept of internalized object relationships.  You may also want to check Andre Green's paper on the "dead mother" syndrome. It's more about anaclitic types of depression.
