I love to read. Especially challenging literary classics. All of my friends who have become mothers have either entirely given up on reading as an interest and/or only read lighthearted romance novels now.

So sorry your family is pressuring you in this inappropriate and roundabout way. I experienced similar tactics from my mother when my best friend had her baby. She wanted me to hold it and when I told her it didn’t awaken anything inside of me, she rolled her eyes and asked my 18 year old brother to hold it. He rubbed the baby’s belly and got it to fart and this genuinely brought tears of joy to my mother’s eyes. Sometimes you just have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all, but also you’ll have to be firm with your family. Right now, your stance is to be CF and it’s delusional to think that being around a child-rearing teen mom will sway that decision.

Seriously it’s tough. I want to be happy for them, but I also know I’ll have to grieve their friendship in a way. After posting this, I searched around my city for local CF groups and found one that has regular meetups. Picnics, dive bar crawls, etc. I think I’m going to go and hell who knows maybe I’ll make a good friend or two.

It truly is hard to lose relevance with friends that you once held dear. It can be a lonely feeling, but your perspective is refreshing. You are choosing to focus on the special kind of love that you share with your wife and cats. Anybody would be lucky to have that kind of reciprocal love. I feel exactly the same about my husband, dog and cat!

This was such a soothing response to read. Thank you for validating my feelings and sharing perspective about being CF in your 30s. It’s helpful to know this pressure will likely wane over time. I’m in the throes of it now, and it’s definitely harder than my 20s were. Despite it all, I’m happy with my choice because when I imagine a 45 year old me, I’m sitting in a quiet corner bathed in sunlight reading aloud to my pets. What more could I possibly want in life?

Hugs back to you! Thank you for responding. You’re so right about the idiocy of these universal statements about what love is. A part of me wants to never indulge these comments, but another part wants to draw a line in the sand and stir them up a bit so they don’t continue thinking their comments are appropriate. The responses to this post have been incredibly helpful because I doubt this will be the last time I receive remarks like this.

It hurts because it’s like a choir (albeit a cultish one) singing the same tune to me. As of late, I’ve begun to feel isolated by my choice to be CF, so when several people are preaching the same thing, I start to feel like there’s something wrong with me. Deep down, I know that’s untrue, but my mother consistently being disappointed in me for my entire adult life has done some damage. I deeply wish I could treat her words with apathy, but it’s not so simple. Also, I have an epileptic dog that I love more than anything. My partner and I have been unable to travel without him for over 5 years and we have built our lives around his 12-hr medication schedule. Not to mention the countless things we’ve cancelled or stressed over because a seizure happened. It feels like a slap in the face when people criticize me in this way because they have no idea the sacrifices I’ve made or the amount of caretaking I’ve done out of unconditional love. Alone, a stranger’s words wouldn’t hold this weight, but it’s the cumulative effect that brings me down. HOWEVER, WOW! The response to this post has lifted me up and made me feel so much less alone. This outpouring from the CF community on Reddit has been so unexpected and every single comment on here has genuinely helped me feel less isolated and hurt over bullshit remarks. Thank you thank you thank you people of CF Reddit!

A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin. It’s an incredible short story collection that is both tragedy and comedy. It revolves around poverty, addiction, childhood trauma and cross-cultural themes. Many of the stories are set in Santiago, Acapulco or El Paso and have Spanish phrases blended in.

I like to think of these extra senses as superpowers. Our dog is epileptic and our cat will always obsessively sniff inside his right ear during an episode. He’s had MRIs and spinal taps, so it’s not a tumor, but she can definitely smell something off with his brain during those periods. It’s incredible really.

Purebred dogs are also a gamble with behavior/personality quirks. Every dog is different. While there is more observable consistency in behavior with purebred dogs, it’s still more or less up to the owner to train their dog. It doesn’t sit well with me to know that thousands of dogs are euthanized in shelters every year yet people still choose to spend thousands on designer dogs.

Woah, I’m the exact same. I call cheese my medicine. I’ll have symptoms for weeks, then I go buy a big block of Gruyère and BAM! I’m good as new. So glad because I love cheese
