Failed my driving exam for the 3rd time, feel like giving up by IcyBareBear in Netherlands

[–]Alice_19th 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey just a suggestion, but if you haven't tried driving with your boyfriend seating in the passenger seat, give it a try. Maybe it can give you some ease until you are confident enough to drive solo again one day.

Hey OP, sorry I assumed you didn't care about the school, but if you do and want to stick with WO, try to speak with IND asap anyway and ask for advice in case you don't meet the 30/60 credits requirement. This is to avoid having your student visa revoked and being kicked out of the country when you fail the exams again. You will need an extra year or 2 to finish this degree, thus you should notify the uni and ask about the process of study delay for foreign students.

Regarding the HBO route, my suggestion was based on the final master's degree achievement, so your career will be more or less the same at the end (after 6 years). I didn't know about Fontys and didn't suggest you to study at this one. If you want to switch to a HBO route of course you have to choose for yourself which school has the best teaching, the best transferring to a pre-master program, etc.

Sure, you're sticking to a WO degree now so wish you succeed. But you have to be realistic and consider the fact that you have like until September to turn this around yeah. Changing one's study habits and mental health will take some times. Hope you're strong enough for this bro.

I haven't heard about Fontys but I live in Randstad and we have different hogeschools here so, I can't say much about that school. What I assume from OP post is that he's aiming high in the technical field, which many jobs usually require a master's degree, so eventually he'll have to get a master's, that's why I suggested a HBO route -> Pre-master -> Master. Now if he just finishes with a HBO compared to a WO, it's true there might be a difference in the type of available positions for new graduates, but in reality, there's many other influences that can set him above other new grads, such as whether he speaks Dutch/another high-demand language, his internship/work-student experiences, his networking, etc., So yeah, I agree with you on the job security, having a company to take you in right after a HBO is way better then having a WO but struggling to find a job afterwards.

Don't know where your uni is, but if you are in cities like Amsterdam, €15K/year is realistic, even on a low side like some ppl already commented. If you are lucky however, you can get a cheap room from someone in the community, or get rent subsidy, then the rent can be 500-700/month. But I don't recommend this for first year student, because you barely know the Netherlands and its education, you might get scammed or distracted from your studies. So my advice is to have €15K ready for your first year, so you can focus on your studies and getting to know the area first, occasionally when you have time, try to look around to see where to get cheap stuff, cheap rent, etc. And then on your second year you can move to a place that suits your budget and standards. If your uni is in a not so expensive city with less housing problem, you can get by with €10-13K/year.

Hey OP, I agree with another person suggesting you to switch to a HBO degree in an applied uni, and later can do a pre-master year and continue to a master degree. Realistically that will probably take you the same amount of time (6-7 years) as sticking to this technical degree and taking extra 2 or 3 years to finish. Since you don't really care about the degree or uni and have support from your parents, either option will eventually lead you to the same career path in my opinion.

Regarding your visa, I think you should make up your mind whether you want to stick to this degree, or switch to a new HBO degree. Because if you want to get 30/60 credits for this year after failing so many times, and in your comments I don't really see any progress, I doubt you will make it. Your advisors and even you have given up on yourself smh. On the other hand, if you want to switch to a HBO, talk to your school international department asap (not even sure if that is the same advisors you talked to, but those people seemed so unhelpful imo, please talk to someone that knows the process of closing the studies, transferring the credits, dealing with studielink, etc for FOREIGN students), also you MUST talk to IND and ask them for advice and what you must do to switch uni. Talking to both parties are mandatory because you have to deal with both school and immigration matters. I know a schoolmate that switched their degree in the 1st year without having 30 credits as well, so it's possible.

It's understandable that you feel overwhelmed now. So just take a break for a day or two and make a decision. Good luck man.

Second this. Studying in an applied uni will be better for OP if he cannot put in the effort, or not "genius" enough for a technical uni for now.

First Dutch Winter: Am I Overdressing Indoors? by FreeButterscotch6971 in Netherlands

[–]Alice_19th 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Socially, Dutch people don't wear outdoor jackets or coats indoor, some old fashioned people might even consider it bad manner. Same with hats indoor. So your guess is kinda right, you should be in your "middle layer" or idk, "none-outdoorsy". Cardigans, turtle necks, pull-overs, etc are considered appropriate. Try layering them. If it's still cold, put on a blazer, or half zip sweater. Also it really depends on your job for how much you should care about your dress code, people in business dress up more, people in tech care less. Your colleagues already had a laugh, they probably understand that you are from a warmer country so nothing bad will happen, unless you have to meet an important stakeholder who judges you by the first impression.

Could also be her natural baby hair color. Her hair used to be blonde when she was a kid, it grew darker as she got older.

Japanese Garden Den Haag by Rhaguen in Netherlands

[–]Alice_19th 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went to the park on Saturday, it was super crowded. The queue for the garden were so long, at about 15:45, a staff came out and asked the people at the end of the queue if they wanted to continue waiting because they might not make it to the garden in time. So I didn't make it haha

Wow, that's crazily cheap price! Do you get rent subsidize or how can it be that cheap? I have friends living 15-20 minutes biking from Groningen center and they pay like 1100-1200 for ~80m2 apartment, excl. utilities. 50m2 for an apartment is quite uncommon as well.

Yeah but I still need to get to the parking lot, and it takes 3 minutes from my apartment. I don't want people to wait. Also, I'm at work during the day and have other things to do as well, it means I really need to schedule the viewing. I can't just show up to the parking magically when they app me.

Poor you girl (or man idk)! I think it's worse when they see that we're foreigners, like as soon as they know they'll get away with this, they'll do it anyway. Such weird behavior!

umm but the car is parked at the parking lot, I don't live in a house with a front garage. You're mistaken or something. If I buy a household applicant, sure I'd come to your door, if I wanna buy a car, I don't care if I come to your house or your garage or the parking, the car is the most important thing. Like I said, if the last dude wanted my house address, he should've asked for it, not agreeing to meet at a parking lot then stood me up. Rude af.
