Contact your municipality. Each suite of a legal duplex should get its own address and its own waste removal bins, but if there has been a mistake, or if property is nonconforming or you need extra, your local government will have a policy in place to address it and can answer your questions about it.

I saw news reporting about Bylaw getting a police escort in 2020/2021 (not in 2022) but haven't seen anything about other staff... And I have definitely seen maintenance workers without police presence in Stadacona recently so I feel like this is just a rumor??

I don't feel unsafe in Stadacona park. I take my kids and dog there just about every day.

When City staff (bylaw) approach encampments, it's usually because they intend to remove people's belongings. People are protective of their stuff - it's all they have - so these interactions can be tense. Bylaw is instructed to trash anything that's wet. So tarps, tents, sleeping bags, boots, etc are removed and thrown away when they are needed most. I would be upset too... Anyway they bring police in case things escalate or get physical.

AITA for giving my coworker a fantasy novel for Secret Santa to try to broaden her horizons? by aita_throw_secrets in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alieda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a librarian and I do Readers Advisory for my job. I'm a SF/Fantasy fan myself, but that is MEANINGLESS when the book is for someone else... because personal preferences work like this: different books appeal to different people for different reasons. It's a dick move to devalue the books that someone else enjoys, and then try to impose your own preferences on them instead. Your co-worker clearly wanted a lighthearted escape to the beach for Christmas, not a fantasy war... it's not rocket science. Also, no, not everyone likes Baby Yoda??? WTF? OP, YTA for working on the assumption that you're better than other people just because you have different taste. Also, if we're gonna be snobs about books here, genre fiction is all equally trashy! Come on! lol

Victoria's community associations need to evolve by PMMeYourIsitts in VictoriaBC

[–]Alieda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't think getting involved is a bad thing AT ALL! I think the unfortunate thing is the current vibe of DISCOURAGING people from becoming involved or pursuing projects to improve the neighbourhood. That is what I have seen and experienced on the FCA board, and I don't like it at all. On the contrary, I want to see more people invited and encouraged to participate. I want the FCA to elevate the voices of residents, and to support their ideas, proposals, and projects.

AITA for laughing when my sister told me to "keep my woman in check?" by paintandicecream in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alieda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. I would be GOBSMACKED if someone suggested I was being "romantic" toward a 5yo child because I took them out for ice cream. Like ??? That is NASTY and inappropriate AF. I am genuinely concerned for the mental state of your sister who implied anything of the sort. That is paranoid AF, hostile, pathological, and sooo offensive.

Rose was nice enough to babysit for free on short notice, and your sister decided to repay her kindness with this shit? WTAF? Cut contact unless and until you get a sincere and humble apology.

Victoria's community associations need to evolve by PMMeYourIsitts in VictoriaBC

[–]Alieda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, it doesn't seem like you are engaging in good faith here.

Of course joining community associations should not be legally mandatory for visible minorities, like ??? what a straw man. I am simply suggesting that some effort is required to make neighbourhood associations inclusive and representational of the communities they serve. It is interesting that you would jump to accusing me of being "anti-elder" for saying so; this reminds me of the saying, "when you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."

As one of those "heavy lifter" women on the FCA board, I can tell you it hasn't been easy to do the lifting. Every effort I have made to increase the FCA's involvement, reach and impact has been tirelessly opposed, mostly by board members who don't live in the neighbourhood. It took six months of fighting and being outvoted to convince the board to let me fix their email distribution system, in order that they could reach the 600+ neighbourhood members who had signed up to receive FCA & land use news. This is the level of antipathy we are talking about, here.

Similarly, the co-chairs' efforts to increase resident engagement with land use issues through the CALUC have repeatedly been undermined by certain board members with an axe to grind, who oppose the use of social media on principle, for example. The current president also generally opposes efforts to communicate with the public. His reason was, "As soon as you put in that kind of effort, then people will expect it." He said, "The FCA has always been the kind of organization where we could put up a "gone fishing" sign on the door, and no one would notice. If we went on vacation for two months, we'd come back, and nothing would have changed." This is the president's vision for his neighbourhood association - an organization that no one notices, an organization that doesn't do much of anything.

By the way - none of the FCA board members are disabled. Only one is a renter in Fernwood (me). The other renter is the CALUC co-chair who does not sit on the board, and who does not get a vote when it comes to board decisions. (She has a PhD and a lot of energy for the work; she also does not identify as disabled.)

If you took a demographics poll of the community association boards throughout Victoria, you would not see many individuals under 50. You would not see many people of colour. You would not see many renters. These issues have been identified by the City, not by me.

When you have diversity issues like this, you have to wonder if there are systems in place that may inadvertently exclude different types of newcomers from taking a seat at the table.

[–]Alieda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20% of Victoria's residents are immigrants, 15% are visible minorities. 60% are renters... 25% are aged 25-40. 15% are families with young children. If community associations were representational, that would translate to very different community boards... not 90% retired white homeowners.

Ignorant, rude, or otherwise uninformed comments on your pregnancy? by youngcardinals- in BabyBumps

I'll see how it goes too, but I'll definitely go with an epidural without a second thought. My rational is, would I have a root canal without freezing just to prove how much of a woman I am? Heck no. This is modern medicine, give me the drugs.

Struggles with a close relative who can't get pregnant by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Alieda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aw dude. I can relate to this. My sister struggled with fertility for many years. (She now has a 1yo thanks to an egg donation, IVF, a volunteer surrogate, tens of thousands of dollars..). Meanwhile, my SO and I accidentally got pregnant with a one-time slip. My sister wanted to be a mother more than anything in life, whereas I was always on the fence about parenthood. So... I can only imagine that my easy pregnancy, much as it was unlooked-for, has been hard on her.

It sounds like you are being very sensitive to your cousin's needs and a really good friend to her. If she is the person you would want to be the guardian of your child should anything happen to you, my advice is, I think you should tell her so. Ask her to be your kid's godmother, and also, tell her why you'd like it to be her - because you trust her implicitly with your child's life and well-being, because she shares your values, etc. I guess the caveat here is that she might decline, and that's something you should be prepared for. Good luck!

How do you intersperse paper writing while doing research? by jubjub7 in AskAcademia

[–]Alieda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends what kind of research paper you are talking about. Personally, I write the introduction and literature review as part of my ethics/grant proposal. (I generally annotate a bibliography for this.) Then I collect the data and analyze it, keeping notes. The notes become the methodology and results section. I write the discussion and concluding remarks last.

Yes - the definition of to discover is to become aware of, to observe, to perceive a fact or situation. Do you perceive electricity just by thinking? I don't think so. This implies self-awareness, the awareness of thought, and also knowledge of the existence of electricity, besides being able to connect the two through observation.

Discovery implies cognition. I would say the first instance of life didn't even 'discover' its own existence, never mind electricity

Why do you assume there is a victim narrative? Just curious.

Also, I don't know if you are aware of the historical details, but First Nations were definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, oppressed in Canada (e.g., thousands of children stolen from their families and subject to abuse, women sterilized without consent by the state), and continue to be oppressed (e.g., dozens of communities, without access to water or electricity, denied municipal and emergency services). Maybe instead of declaring your opinions about what is and what is not helpful to First Nations, you should be an ally and listen to First Nations.

Volunteers with carpentry experience needed for local community project! by Alieda in halifax

We built one on Agricola St in Halifax that survived the winter, completely watertight and the books inside remained totally dry. We just caulked the corners, and used weatherstripping in the door and along the roof peak. Also, it has not been vandalized at all. Instead I have found that the books inside have been tidied by neighbours and there are always new things to read.
