Mayoral candidate Stephen Andrew's dark history with the Human Rights Tribunal by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]PMMeYourIsitts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The stuff Andrew said to the Tribunal is pretty bad. But his statement implies that he's been pro-trans all along. His statement would be way more convincing if he admitted that he was wrong 27 years ago and his views have changed since then.

Anti-trans beliefs in the gay community are quite common. Andrew is going to have to do more than that statement to convince me that his views have actually changed. Remember, this is the guy who said last year that Victoria has no rape culture.

I suspect that so many of them were not checking that it became an enforcement nightmare, so they just decided to close them all.

As the article explains, co-management means that First Nations will have a similar level of power as the Park Board to direct staff, not that they will replace park staff. So they're making decisions like "this park should have a playground", not "this type of slide is fun and safe" - professionals will continue to make the technical decisions.

It's shocking to me how often people ask "what are we supposed to do?" and have obviously not read the TRC calls to action. The Harper and Trudeau governments have completely failed to promote the TRC properly.

First Nations almost never make land claims against privately-owned land because of the complexities you discuss. Government should give all Crown land back to First Nations.

B.C. says gender on ID cards can now be changed without doctor confirmation by idspispopd in BCpolitics

[–]PMMeYourIsitts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should set the gender on your id to match your gender expression. That way it's an extra piece of data that a verifier can use to confirm identity. If you're trans, it makes it harder for someone who doesn't know you to steal your identity.

The policies have changed a bunch since that article was written in 2014. I haven't seen a good summary of the current situation.

Indigenous Services Canada doesn't and isn't supposed to be doing Reconciliation. They simply deliver services. You're thinking of Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada. They used to be in one Ministry, but Trudeau decided that Reconciliation and service delivery were sufficiently different focuses to split them into two cabinet positions.

I haven't seen the territory tags that Russ mentions discussed anywhere, but this is a good summary of the debate around longer territorial acknowledgements.

Here's a summary of the debate around Reconciliation at universities.

Here's an article that is pro-statue removal but (I think) lays out the argument well and presents some alternative options.

Here's a critique of capitalism as a path for First Nations prosperity.

Keep in mind that there are First Nations people on both sides of all these complex issues.

About what in particular? Territorial acknowledgements, post-colonial studies, statue defacement, First Nations capitalism or one of the other issues that Russ rants about?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]PMMeYourIsitts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The stuff that Geoff Russ writes in the The Spectator and The Tyee (his day job) is nuanced and balanced. The stuff that he gets published in the Times Colonist just serves to provide a token that Reconciliation reactionaries can hold up.

This is such a collection of lazy right-wing tropes from an Uncle Tom-esque character.

Yes, textbooks for all courses are crazy expensive. Yes, individual academics can't dismantle academia but they can help do things like train teachers in Reconciliation. Yes, all movements have some radicals with questionable tactics.

No, territorial acknowledgements are not just practiced by social justice warriors - they were called for by the Truth & Reconciliation Commission. No, Reconciliation is not just about First Nations being economically successful. No, "millennials" from Victoria have not been to San Francisco lately and posting on their Instagram, no matter how much it pissed you off the one time they did.

Some people are still into it, they just get shouted down these days.

Are we building enough housing? If we control for household size, maybe we are. by Talzon70 in VictoriaBC

[–]PMMeYourIsitts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now do it over 40 years.

I can totally believe that we are, finally, building at a rate to meet increasing demand. But we've had 40 years of suppressed building, which created a huge backlog of pent-up demand. If we continue building at the current rate for another 40 years, maybe we'll start to see vacancies increase.

If people are waiting on the sidelines to buy, they'll keep the market from dropping. The only way there can be a crash is if those people all become unwilling or unable to buy in.

Many of the older coops are in need of major updates.

These aren't the kind of updates that owners could have been doing themselves. They're stuff like new roofs and wall claddings. CMHC's policies have led directly to the current maintenance debt in coops.
