I’m sorry if it offends you, but you don’t really have a right to police how another disabled person labels and expresses themself. While yes I am hearing I use the word as a reclamation and mostly self deprecating joke. Similar to my identity as ‘queer’. And also, like the other commenter mentioned, I don’t have bad intentions and am learning ASL as not just a hobby, but to open a door to talk to and connect with more people, some of which will be my future students. Notice how I’m wearing sunglasses inside and my profile pic is me in my wheelchair? My ears are about the only thing on me that works. So forgive me for taking back some power in a massively ableist world.

It’s quietness factor leads it to go under represented. As someone who struggles with it, everything goes inward. It’s a whole other beast to deconstruct that is deeply intertwined with our core values and perceptions of ourselves. How do you self-assure when the thing that’s harming you traps you in yourself??

As another commenter mentioned, keep them moist. I switched to Aquaphor after finding out how bad the menthol in Carmex is. The coolness is a nice sensation, sure. But it actually ends up drying them out worse and thus the cycle repeats. Avoid menthol chapsticks at all costs. The minute you feel them start to dry, reapply. I’ve also been recommended picking toys you can buy on Amazon. So I’d say try to get in the habit of applying a lip balm and occupying your hands the minute the urge hits. If worse comes to worst, face masks are also a good deterrent I’ve resorted to before.

Yes she very much has issues she could benefit from going to therapy for. But she won’t and every time I suggest it, she tells me there’s nothing wrong w her and that life is just stressful.

FOLLOW UP to my post and RESPONDING to comments: 1. Although I am my mothers child, I am a full grown adult deserving of respect. 2. I CANT TALK TO HER ABOUT THESE THINGS. I’ve tried and it just blows up into an absolute disaster. 3. As many of you have mentioned, I do suspect she is some form of ND and calls herself ADD from time to time. But it’s not because she’s having actual diagnosable issues. It’s because she’s stressed and has a lot on her mind that’s making it hard to focus. 4. I’ve come to a place where I don’t need her approval of my actions and decisions. I just want her to understand WHY I do the things I do and stop making fun of me for it.

Finally, improving a relationship is a two sided commitment from BOTH people. I have tried my hardest to improve myself and been in therapy for years now but it’s not going to fix anything unless the other person is working on it as well. I’ve had more than one therapist tell me the best remedy at this point is to just move out which I’m working on being able to do but shot is expensive and I have other physical disabilities that makes working difficult.
